Why AutoDiscovery

Can someone explain to me why do people do a scheduled autodicovery, surely if you have discovered your servers once, that should be it. I just add servers manually as we get new servers, I cannot understand the need of doing autodicovery every six hours, like somepeople do. Am I doing this wrong do I need to do a autodicovery every day or so?

Honestly, I can't see much advantage to it either. We have it turned off, and add new servers, just like you do. I suppose autodiscovery would be helpful if you add alot of servers, or just don't feel like adding new servers manually, but it has to work well first.

If a single group administers and adds all servers, manual works fine. But we have several groups administering servers, separate from the actual administration of CIM. We also have hundreds of subnets and sometimes multiple servers being added to the network each day. Sometimes, people even add servers without telling us.

As a result, AutoDiscovery helps us keep a tab on who is adding devices and where they are.

Well, thanks for that I thought for a moment I was the only one not running AutoDiscovery. I do understand why some people might want to run it now.

George when you build a lot of servers the more automation you have to make your job easier the better, maybe I am missing the point but why do you think HP included it as a feature!When you have 1000+ NT and Win2k servers and you build IM7 from scrath believe me you don't want to add them all manually.

Side-note: you can also take advantage of the SNMP Trap Auto-Discovery which adds servers to the IM7 database whenever they've sent a trap to IM7.
So if you rollout servers and configure the trap destination correctly to IM7, you don't have to discover them.
