Dell Servers showing up as Unknown System Type

I have setup HP System Insight Manager and are monitoring a few hundred HP and Dell Servers. For the Dell Servers a few show a System Type of 'Server' with a Product Name of 'Dell Server'. The remaining Dell Servers show a System Type 'Unknown' and a blank Product Name. The ones that show unknown are Dell PE2450 , 2500, 2550, 6400, 6450, 1550. The SMNP strings are correct and I see both the Server name and IP address. Secondly how can I get the OS Name, all the Dell(s) show blank for this field?

Re: Dell Servers showing up as Unknown System Type

It really is down to how the Dells are configured and what info they're supplying to the world via either SNMP or DMI.

You can add devices to IM using the IP Address as a template. You could set up additional devices, but if you don't get a response from either DMI or SNMP then the Server doesn't have those options configured.

Re: Dell Servers showing up as Unknown System Type

They are configured properly for SNMP and the latest Dell Open Manager software. It seems like the Dell Mib that is installed in SIM are not seeing these servers. Do I need to compile the Dell MIBS? And if so, is there a process to follow?

Re: Dell Servers showing up as Unknown System Type

The Discovery process uses an established set of default MIBs to identify a product.
I don't know that registering any additional MIB's will resolve that.
The additional MIB's are used for translated SNMP Traps generated from the Servers into recognisable events, and will not aid device recognition.
That's why I suggested going through the Manage System Types screen and adding a new device.

Re: Dell Servers showing up as Unknown System Type

No, the Dell MIB is already compiled.

Assuming that these are running Windows, the way we do data collection from the Dell is through WMI. Make sure the WMI mapper is installed and that you have given hpSIM a valid username/password to the system.

Re: Dell Servers showing up as Unknown System Type

I would like to do that. I am not sure of which information to give for the following:

MIB Definition File Name
MIB Variable Name
Object Identifier

Re: Dell Servers showing up as Unknown System Type

You might want to follow Davids lead on this, I'll bow to experience.

But, when adding a device you can "Get" the info from IP Address of the Server you're interested in. You don't need to know any of the stuff. Just hit the Retrieve From System Button, leaving the left field blank and it will provide you with details and a space for the IP Address.
