Duplicate Records in database tables, reporting is a mess.

When running reports or extracting data directly from SQL tables we've noticed lots of duplicate records in tables like CIM_NetworkAdapter. Has anyone else seen this? We are at SIM 4.0, Does 4.1 or 4.1.1 fix this? If so, how difficult is it to upgrade to 4.1.1? Does it require an uninstall/install?

The problem is not corrected in SIM 4.1. If you are not monitoring any Unix or Linux servers then you might try disabling WBEM since the duplicates are a result of collecting data using both the SNMP and WBEM protocols.

Work is being done in SIM 4.2 to improve this situation.

SIM 4.1 does not support upgrades from 4.0 however 4.2 which is due out before the end of the year will support upgrades.

Disable WBEM on the client or in SIM?

Disable WBEM in SIM Options --> Protocol Settings --> Global Protocol Settings

Will I lose other valuable reporting information and do you suggest deleting machines from the database and rediscovering them to clean up the information?

I do not believe you will loose any information and yes you probably should delete the systems from the database and rediscover them. You can then run the data collection task manually Options --> Data Collection since it normally runs biweekly.

Re: Duplicate Records in database tables, reporting is a mess.

Hi,

I just tried this on two systems. To review the steps I took:

- Disabled WEBM under "Global Protocol Settings"
- Deleted both systems
- Manually re-discovered both systems
- Ran Data Collection task on both systems with the "Overwrite" option

The Data Collection report, I'm glad to say, is now a lot cleaner. However, there is some information lost, such as a few of the fields in "Operating System Details" and the model names for the network interface cards. Whether this is important information is subjective.

Please tell me more about the Data Collection task and the overwrite switch.

David,

The Data Collection Task normally runs every two weeks. You can run it manually from the "Options" menu. When you run it, it asks you if you want to overwrite the data or add to it. The latter is really only useful if you are doing historical trending, and "overwrite" is the default.

I hope that helps!

Data seems to be a lot cleaner and reporting is much better.
