Hello,
I am in the unfortunate position of being asked to get as much data as possible regarding utilization of our hp EVAs without having a copy of SANworks reporter (apparently v.v. expensive) ... I have experimented with the SIM reporting features but find that they are very limited and seem to be bound to the database views rather than the tables themselves.
In order to progress this situation I have bought a copy of Crystal Reports 10 and am faced with producing a data dictionary, from scratch.
Is there anyone on this forum who has already done this ?
Also, can anyone give any tips on how to get the maximum amount of SAN information out of the SIM databases ?
Also regarding the SAN, exactly which items require SNMP community and trap destinations to be configured in order for all SAN devices to be recognised ? Just the SWMA management processor ? The SAN switches themselves ? The HSV110s ?
Any info anyone can give on the subject of SANs and an HP SIM data dictionary would be very helpful.
Regards

Re: Getting useful SAN metrics / SIM/PMP data dictionary
The schema of all the database tables is documented in help (help --> index and then scroll down to database for the entry "Using Default Tools - Database Tables") as well as the document "HP Systems Insight Manager Help Guide" on page 191. Get the document by going to http://www.hp.com/servers/manage --> HP SIM --> Information Library.
You might also want to look at "Using HP Systems Insight Manager with HP StorageWorks Management Software" on that same web page. Aside from receiving events and linking to other StorageWorks software, HP SIM does not collect much configuration or asset data from the SAN.

Solution
I'm new to EVA's myself, but you should be able to obtain some data from the Storage Management Appliance Reports module.
I believe, but haven't tested this yet, that the SMA contains a SQL Database, so you could potentially query that.
The SIM Database is quite light on SAN details, it certainly doesn't see much of our EMA based SAN, just the HBA Cards.
