HP SIM does not receive traps from other systems
Hi there,
since some weeks, my HP SIM does not receive traps from the monitored systems anymore.
I receive events that systems aren't available or that they are back online, but I don't receive any information on failing hard disks and so on.
It seems as if HP SIM would not pick up the SNMP Traps anymore.
I already verified that such traps successfully arrive at my HP SIM box, but HP SIM does not recognize them...
I enabled the option to receive unregistered traps and I activated all the severity levels.
I also allowed all hosts to send traps to this box.
I already read many messages here, tried to re-activate the monitoring but nothing helped.
Does anyone have an idea what might be the reason?
I use HP SIM 6.0 on a OpenSuSE Linux box.
All the status displays are working fine. It's just the traps...
Best regards,
Tom

Re: HP SIM does not receive traps from other systems
Today I found this in the logs:
02 May 17:12:42,666 INFO [HPSIM_DEBUG] [Status-0] (main) ********* Executing DATA INIT PHASE ONE **********
02 May 17:12:43,017 INFO [HPSIM_DEBUG] [Panic Logger-0] (main) [the cms node] does not have the primary DNS name configured properly
02 May 17:12:43,257 INFO [HPSIM_DEBUG] [Status-0] (main) SNMPREQUEST: Trap Listener: 0.0.0.0 Port: 162
02 May 17:12:43,341 ERROR [STDERR] May 2, 2011 5:12:43 PM com.hp.ov.nms.trapd.SnmpTrapListener setupUDPListener
INFO: Binding to UDP port:
02 May 17:12:54,899 INFO [HPSIM_DEBUG] [Panic Logger-0] (main) [CMS doesnt have fully qualified DNS name], DNSname={0}
Maybe this can help.
The HP SIM server has an entry in the DNS server and thus should have a FQDN...

Re: HP SIM does not receive traps from other systems
I found out why the DNS error message appeared.
I had the following line in my /etc/hosts:
10.20.30.40 hpsim hpsim.domain.name
after changing to
10.20.30.40 hpsim.domain.name hpsim
this error disappeared.
But the issue with the snmp traps is still there.
Now the error message is:
03 May 14:42:53,248 INFO [HPSIM_DEBUG] [Status-0] (main) ********* Executing DATA INIT PHASE ONE **********
03 May 14:42:53,887 INFO [HPSIM_DEBUG] [Status-0] (main) SNMPREQUEST: Trap Listener: 0.0.0.0 Port: 162
03 May 14:42:53,943 ERROR [STDERR] May 3, 2011 2:42:53 PM com.hp.ov.nms.trapd.SnmpTrapListener setupUDPListener

It seems as if the only process binding to port 162 was mxdomainmgr, but there is no state displayed (e. g. LISTENING).
