When I try to install SIM v5 inc SP4, the database field during install displays 'master' and is greyed out so I can not change it!!
This is a brand new install.
I am trying to Install on :
Windows 2003 SP1
and
SQL Server 2000 SP3a

Solution
I had this exact same concern, and it frustrated me very much that I could not find the right documentation to address it.
Here's the scoop: no, during the installation you can not change the database field. However, the good news is that SIM does not actually install to a database named "Master". It creates a new database named "v50_0_xxxxxxxx", where the x's are numbers. I validated this by installing SIM on a test box and putting the database on a development SQL box, just because I wasn't sure what it was going to do.
I compared the number of tables in the Master database before and after the SIM install, and the number didn't change. I know almost nothing about SQL, so I could be very wrong. You might want to wait for input from someone who knows more about SQL. But it didn't appear to me that the SIM install did anything, or at least anything negative to the Master database.
Hope this gives you some confidence.

Re: HP SIM Install Database Field Greyed Out
Spot On!
Went ahead and all seems good! It created database Insight_v5... and appears not to have touched master.

Re: HP SIM Install Database Field Greyed Out
Install went through without apparently touching the master database.
