HPSIM not displaying DNS names.

Hi.

I have HPSIM installed on a RedHat Enterprise 3 Linux box. HPSIM only displays the IP addresses of the managed devices and not the DNS names. DNS is configured correctly as I can ping servers using DNS names. How can I make HPSIM display the DNS names? I know that adding the servers to the Hosts file will probably work, but surely that isnt neccessary?

Thanks!

Re: HPSIM not displaying DNS names.

Greg, what OS are the managed devices using? I has a similar issue with Windows 2003 clients. A

Re: HPSIM not displaying DNS names.

HPSIM needs both forward and reverse DNS lookups to be working before it will display the name.

Re: HPSIM not displaying DNS names.

Thanks for the speedy responses guys.

The managed servers are running Windows 2003 server.

How do I create forward and reverse DNS entries? I can ping the managed nodes from the CMS using DNS names. And I can ping the CMS from the managed nodes using DNS?

Thanks again.

Re: HPSIM not displaying DNS names.

Greg, the issue I had with 2003 clients was the local SNMP configuration. 2003 by default doesn't accept SNMP packets from any host, you have to allow this. Check on the Security tab of the SNMP service that it's set to accept packets from your HPSIM machine. Also you might want to set up the machine to "trust be certificate" and import your HPSIM machines' certificate. After I did this all my machines where picked up corectly by name. Just a thought, A

Re: HPSIM not displaying DNS names.

Hi

The SNMP settings were set to "Accept from any host". Should I try manually set it to accept from the NMS?

Do you mean set up trust certificates on the "System management homepage"? Because that is already setup. I dont need to authenticate with a password to access any of the servers pages.

It is very strange! What OS is your CMS/NMS running? Because it seems strange that yours works and mine doesnt!

Re: HPSIM not displaying DNS names.

Sounds like you have it all set up correctly from the client side, my HPSIM runs on Server 2003 so slightly different. Not sure what else to suggest really - if you do a manual discovery and add a single system by name does it find it, maybe try that to test for name resolution?

Re: HPSIM not displaying DNS names.

Hi. Thanks for the advice, but Im still not having any luck!

I deleted a server from HPSIM and added it manually using its DNS name. The server was added, but it still only displays its IP address!

Re: HPSIM not displaying DNS names.

There must be a problem on the client side, because I just installed the management agents on my Compaq desktop and everything works perfectly. It displays its DNS name.

Sorry, I'm all out. Have you tried what Rob suggested? Ensure you have a Reverse Lookup Zone set up in DNS so you can resolve IP's to hostnames?

Re: HPSIM not displaying DNS names.

Hi. Im not very clued-up on DNS, so what is a reverse lookup zone? As far as I can tell DNS is working because I can ping using a DNS name and it is resolved to IP. I also assume DNS is working correctly because my desktop's DNS name is picked-up.

Re: HPSIM not displaying DNS names.

In DNS you can configure a reverse lookup zone, this means that clients can resolve hosnames from IP addresses. I assume Rob is suggesting that your HPSIM server can find the IP's but may not be able to resolve the names from the addresses. There's lots of DNS info here which should help (assuming you're using a windows DNS environment).

Re: HPSIM not displaying DNS names.

You can use the nslookup utility.
From the HPSIM Server do an nslookup x.x.x.x where the x.x.x.x is the IP Address of the Server you want to check.

See the value returned.
Do an nslookup of the address returned e.g. nslookup myserver.mycom.com

They should correspond.

If you're a windows environment with AD, you should have DNS as part of the environment. That should have both Forward and Reverse lookup sections.

Re: HPSIM not displaying DNS names.

Thanx for all the help guys. I managed to sort everything out. It was the Primary DNS Suffix setting on the Windows 2003 servers. Now for the next question.... is it possible to get iLO ports recognised by DNS name?

Hi Greg,

With regards to the Management Processor question, don't yours show up as:

10.10.10.10 in Server abc123?

Re: HPSIM not displaying DNS names.

Yes, they do. But I was just wondering if I could give them DNS names like server1ilo. So it would show upas server1ilo in server1.

I know Im a bit fussy, but it would be nice.

Re: HPSIM not displaying DNS names.

I thought I was fussy :-) I'd be happy just getting all mine to show up, but that's another story.

Cheers,

Re: HPSIM not displaying DNS names.

If you add the ilo IP Addresses and names into your DNS in both the forward and reverse tabes then they should show up. BUT I've not actually tried this as I'm quite happy with the IP address in ServerX showing up.

Simon,
On the ILO check that you're at least returning a "medium" amount of info in the Insight Manager Integration setting.
