IBM Server details into SIM

I've got alot of IBM X345 servers that are showing up in SIM as unknown system type. I have made sure all the default IBM MIB's that come with SIM are active but from SNMP and Ping all I get is unknown.
I do get some of the IBM servers show up as IBM Server product name but only a couple.
Do I need to have the IBM Director agent on the servers to get more info back (i.e. exact server type, etc)?
I've tried this but only the local admin account can login to the IBM Director agent console screen!
Does anyone know how to get them to report decent model and system type info?

Thanks

Re: IBM Server details into SIM

You'll probably need to add a new device type for them.

You'll just need the IP Address from one of them, go to Options, Discovery, Manage Systems Types. Select New and then hit the retrieve from System Button. Put the IP Address in the box and go from there. You may need to customise the Match a bit in one of the later screens but that's about it.

I use this to display various Sun Servers.

Re: IBM Server details into SIM

Thanks Rob, I've just done that and it returns the same object identifier as is listed for "IBM Server".
But the devices are still showing as unknown?!?!?!
It would be nice to have IBM Server if nothing else but I should be able to pull back the SMBIOS info surely.

Tony:

You're correct about the SMBIOS stuff, but what's missing is the transport. HP SIM uses WBEM/WMI to gather this type of information on non-ProLiant servers. Make sure you have WBEM configured in HP SIM and have the WMI mapper properly installed.

Re: IBM Server details into SIM

David,
The device identification doesn't rely on the WBEM/WMI stuff does it?

Tony,
Do the Servers use SNMP and if so check the settings. The "Unknown" indicates that a Management protocol has been used but not identified the device. The Management protocol could be SSH. The easiest way is just to click on the Server name from HPSIM, the Management protocols are listed.

The device can be identified by just SNMP.

Re: IBM Server details into SIM

Thanks guys, the mgmt protocol for the IBM server just shows up as SNMP:1.0.
I can send test traps to the HP SIM server so I know SNMP works.
I've created a domain account and added it to the list of WBEM accounts to use. Hopefully this will discover the IBM servers. I'll let you know how I get on!
