Installing HP SIM 5.2 on a remote Oracle DB located on a different server

Hi Guys,

From looking through our HP SIM forum, I can see everyone prefers to use SQL 2005 Express / SQL 2005 Standard edition with HP SIM 5.2. Has any one successfully installed HP SIM 5.2 with Oracle database which is located on a different server or SAN storage ( NOT locally on the HP SIM 5.2 server itself )? During the installation of HP SIM when come to select which database you want to use with HP SIM 5.2, it does not give the option to point to an Oracle DB which is located somewhere else ?

Second question: I can see a lot of support HP provided and available for SQL 2005 Express / SQL 2005 Standard in this Forum, what about for Oracle DB ? Going forward...Does HP support issues with HP SIM 5.2 > Oracle database which we might come across them later on if we go that way to install Oracle with HP SIM 5.2 ?? By looking this Forum and gone through 40 pages of it, I can not see anyone using Oracle DB with HP Sim 5.2 nor any support is provided from HP !

So, what HP recommands to go with from support side of things MS SQL 2005 / Oracle ?

Any help would be appreciated because we are in a planning process to install and configure the NEW verion of HP SIM 5.2 but I would like to get the advise to select the best option to go with here either with SQL 2005 /Oracle DB?

Thank you
Robert

Re: Installing HP SIM 5.2 on a remote Oracle DB located on a different server

I have installed SIM V5.2 with Oracle 10g on a separate server. Install Oracle first, create a database, then create an empty Table space in it, e.g. simdb_ts, and create a user for it. After installing SIM, run mxoracleconfig to tell SIM about the DB details, then run mxinitconfig -a as usual. I also installed the Oracle Native compiled Java option, and created an online Backup schedule. BTW, both SIM and Oracle run on Linux servers. I have no experience with Windows servers ( but I might have to run SIM on Windows sooner or later, if RSP is going to be used).

Re: Installing HP SIM 5.2 on a remote Oracle DB located on a different server

Thanks Ron,

I have a current Windows 2003 SP2 HP SIM 5.1 server with SQL 2000 Standard edition on it. Our company is looking into upgrading
HP SIM 5.1 server to the latest version HP SIM 5.2 and migrating the database to an Oracle database which is sitting on a Database server.
I checked the â SIM Windows Installation and Configuration Guideâ the instructions there only talks about how to install the SIM on a local instance of the Oracle !!! I would like to know how to install the HP SIM 5.2 on a remote instance of an Oracle database where is sitting on a different database server so, I can tell HP SIM 5.2â s installation to go to that location and install itself on that Oracle database instance ?? When I come to the â Database Configuration â page, there is no instructions on how to install HP SM on a remote instance of an Oracle database ?

Also, when I was going through the pages on the HP SIM Forum, I could see everyone is using either SQL 2005 Express or SQL 2005 Standard editions with HP SIM 5.2 and also could see a good support was provided by HP guys as well.

I could not see any customers out there using Oracle with HP SIM 5.2 and wanted to see if they come across any issues etc ?? I rather go with the majority of customers out there in the real world where they all using either SQL 2005 Express or SQL 2005 Standard editions with HP SIM 5.2.

Any reason why we do not see any customers out there in real world using HP SIM 5.2 with Oracle databases ?? Is it too hard to manage/support it ? Is it simpler to go with SQL databases ??

Cheers,
Robert

Re: Installing HP SIM 5.2 on a remote Oracle DB located on a different server

Robert,

In my case MicroSoft SQL was not an option. I ran with PostgreSQL for a while, but the large number of nodes ( > 2300 ) dictated the use of Oracle.
As I said earlier, after installing HP SIM, run the CLI command "mxoracleconfig" to point SIM to the DB server and the DB details.
May I suggest you save you current node population to an .hosts file, to be used for populating the new (empty) SIM database.
Since migrating to Oracle, I have had no issues with it; as a matter of fact it runs appreciably quicker.

Re: Installing HP SIM 5.2 on a remote Oracle DB located on a different server

Thanks Ron,

How do you save your current node population to an .hosts file, to be used for populating the new (empty) SIM 5.2 database? Also, when you select the option to install HP SIM 5.2 on Oracle do you get an optioon e.g. Custom installation so, you could provide the details for the remore Instance of the Oracle and the Port number for HP SIM 5.2 to connect to? sorry, I am not familiar with Oracle stuff .. I have done SQL install etc in the past with HP SIM 5.1.

Cheers,
Robert
