More detailed/verbose Event Reporting in Emails?

I have HP SIM 7sp2.2, and it appears to be functioning as it should, however I need to see more information from Emails sent when SIM is doing Event Reporting.

I have seen some threads concerning this subject, however none appear to go into the detail necessary to fully answer/fix the issue(s) / problem(s).

My focus/concern at this point is 200+ Windows 2000/2003 servers, all within a single AD Domain.

- Does anyone have detailed instructions on setting up servers to have the SNMP service have the address of the IM7 server so it can send SNMP traps?

- Does anyone have detailed instructions on how to make these adjustments through Group Configuration so you don't have to visit each server?

- Will this then provide detailed/verbose reporting in emails, or are there other steps involved, and if so, what are they (in detail, please)?

Re: More detailed/verbose Event Reporting in Emails?

You've posted this in the HPSIM forum, there's a separate forum for CIM 7.

For SNMP you need to set it up to be able to receive SNMP Access from CIM 7 and to be able to send SNMP Traps.

You need to set up a new Read/Write Community name for Insight Manager. This allows IM to be able to adjust threshold bars etc.
You also need to set add the IM Server to the Trap Destinations.
Both done in the Services Panel for the SNMP Service.
Then you can go to Tasks, Create a new Control Task and then you use the Server you have configured as the template and populate the other Servers with these details.

Having Servers send SNMP Traps to the IM Server will increase the amount of data you will receive.
However, if you want to further tailor this you can use the Application Launch feature to run a script which can read data from the variables IM Passes.

Note CIM 7 is on the way out being replaced by IM 7.
For IM 7 the Technical reference Guide contained used info on Application Launch and other Task related actions.

Re: More detailed/verbose Event Reporting in Emails?

ROB,
I am using HP Systems Insight Manager... (see above).

Is the solution the same for HP SIM as it 'was' for CIM?

There is nothing "built in" to HP Systems Insight Manager to provide verbose event reporting (i.e., something more than 'A critical event has occurred'), without creating custom tasks and scripts with Visual Basic or PERL?

Re: More detailed/verbose Event Reporting in Emails?

Rob,
First of all, my apologies. You are correct, what I WAS using was "HP Insight Manager", not "HP Systems Insight Manager"...

I ASSumed that when HP sent me my subscription materials in mid-January that what I got was HP Systems Insight Manager - Release date was supposed to be January... (HP had been 'beating their drums' about the new "HP Systems Insight Manager" for months). Since I didn't have any other version of the software running, there was no comparison to go by...

When HP made notification of the available download, I did not equate it to be a NEW product, just a minor update of what I was running... (WRONG!)...

Well, I am now 'on the road' & trying to get HP Systems Insight Manager to do what we want it to... Different Look, new arrangement for places & things, a more professional 'feel'... It's like learning to walk all over again...

Re: More detailed/verbose Event Reporting in Emails?

Richard,
All of the Agent/Server stuff is the same.
So, you still need to update SNMP at the Server end to send SNMP Traps to the IM Server.
You can test this is working by using the HP Agents GUI, in Control Panel, it has a send test Trap function. That should create an Unregistered Major Event in IM.

Note, you can send to multiple destinations so you can have CIM 7 and HPSIM on different Servers running in parallel and generate a trap.

The e-mail generated by HPSIM is better formatted than CIM 7. But, if you want to mess about with the format then you'll need to use the run Custom Command option. This is the equivalent of the Application Launch in CIM 7. I use this approach to reformat a message for direct posting into our Remedy System. But you might want to look at the messages HPSIm issues by default first.
