problem upgrading from 5.0sp4 to 5.1

Hi guys

Just to give you my input as well.
I ended up getting the same error as mentioned in the topic.

I also followed Ole Thomsens procedure and managed to finish the installation without any further problems.
So far my installation works fine after the upgrade.

One thing worth mentioning is that I got some problems upgrading the HP Performance Management Pack. It stopped with an error creating the database.
What I had to do was to remove the old database for PMP and then the upgrade process continued without problems.

Well, same problem just endless dots........

Tried Darrin's workaround but still dots ......... Lots and Lots of dots .......

I am not looking forward to uninstalling and reconfiguring the server by hand, but unless I find some magical solution I will be doing just that.

The only difference, is my SQL db is 2005sp1.

Anyone else have any suggestions prior to my reinstall?

Look in the log files under 'c:\' and see if this gives you any information to what might be going on. What is doing the '...'?

I'd log a support case, they might know off the top. Be sure and say "Insight Manager" or "Systems Insight Manager" for the voice recognition piece to get to the SIM specific support folks.

I ran the upgrade and changed the hp.Database.prepareSQL=0 in database.admin and database.props and then ran mxinitconfig.exe -a.

SIM then started working, but I now have the same problem that Alex @ Hu's got, where the data collection fails on all the servers. Was there a resolution to that problem?

You are my hero.. The workaround worked great. I added the property to both files before the upgrade. Then upgraded my system to 5.1, restarted it. Stopped the SIM Service and ran the mxinitfongi -a. System comes up with no issue that i can tell. All my systems are there and it seems to be plugging along.

Thank you so much for making what i thought might be complete desaster ok to do!
(The past 5 upgrade always crashed my CIM,IM,SIM and i had to rebuilt)

I am in process of upgrading HP SIM 5 SP5 to new version 5.1, but after reading many problems describes by customers and workaround isnâ t working for everyone for new v5.1, I am going to hold onto HP SIM 5 SP5 for time being, since I have about 1600 servers countrywide in HP SIM and working just fine.

I've always been a fan of the philosophy â if it arenâ t busted, don't fix it". I know that, keeping the current version of SIM 5 SP5, it will be off by one hour for schedules/tasks/events jobs the affected periods of March 11 to April 1, 2007, and then it will all set.

I hope HP pay very good attention to this kind of problems for new version and help customers with a quick update patch or provide best work around solution.

I ran Darrin's fix on my dev environment to upgrade from 5.0 SP5 to 5.1 and it worked great. Off to run it against prod now.. fingers crossed.

Same old story. Upgrade goosed as soon as it got the the database bit. Rebuilt to v5 sp5 and it's damaged the database too badly. Will restore DB to get as much data out as possible then start a brand new installation.

Where on earth are the fail safes?!

I tried the workaround on my certification system and all steps went OK.

However when I login to the updated system I get the follow error

Looks like the root cause has been debugged thanks to a couple of customers helping out via some support cases logged.

In SIM 5.1, we made a change to the installer to allow you to change during an upgrade the username/password that SIM was installed under originally. This functionality causes issues with the Account Lockout policy.

Turns out the installer will retry 10 times to get access to the db, then 'move on'.

For those trying a new upgrade of SIM 5.1, a workaround will be to disable the account lock out policy for the duration of the installation portion of SIM. Once it is installed, then you can reenable the policy. I think you could change the lockout to be say 15 and be okay (which typically is 3, 6, or 8) but haven't tried that yet.

My upgrade also went pear shaped.

Ran mxinitconfig.exe -a

Started SIM and I have my SIM 5.1 server with all my config and servers listed.

I don't think I have ever done a SIM upgrade that has gone like clock work and I've been using the product for over 8 years!

Still work in progress. In going through many different iterations of changing usernames/passwords during the various installs, we found an issue with the virtualization piece IF the username was changed during the SIM install process. We've been working through all this and the ETA is the end of this week for completion of all the test scenarios; so far so good.

Available on the web is looking like the end of next week. Again, we are going through this as fast as we can, but we are also being fairly diligent to make sure we don't create more problems.

I still see the same issue - the thousands of dots
I fortunately have a test computer server this year.

What do all the dots mean?

The GUI installed did not complete. This is why I am running the mxinitconfig -a command.

I have set trust by certificate for HP SIM. I also have data in the HP SIM 5.0 sp # 5 database I want to keep. These are two reasons I need this upgrade to work.
