Servers howing as Unmanaged (but others are!)

Some new servers where installed (ML350s). All identical but some are showing as unmanaged and you don't get a link to the Agents Home page.

If I Terminal in, I can get the Homepage up from the Start Menu so the agents are installed and running.

Odd!

Thanks for any help.

Re: Servers howing as Unmanaged (but others are!)

UnManaged means HPSIM has not been able to use any of the protocols to esablish a connection to interrogate the box.
SNMP is the asiest to set up.
If they're W2003 Servers, check in SNMP to see if either "Allow All Hosts" is checked or the HPSIM Server has been added.
Check the community name strings, a minimum of a Read Only SNMP Community is required to identify the Server.
Anything that would block SNMP between SIM Server and Servers?

Re: Servers howing as Unmanaged (but others are!)

Hi, checked all that, also checked SNMP, all setup correctly (same as other servers running 2003).

Do I need to reload the agents or Supportpaq?

Have reloaded latest supportpaq and rebooted, checked Firewall, SNMP UDP port open for traps.

Re: Servers howing as Unmanaged (but others are!)

Hi, check your services on the machines, if there are several HP services like Agents, Web and so on. If not the management agents are not installes and the system could not identify itself for web management. Apply then the Agents again.

The management HP ( 127.0.0.1:2301 ) doesn't work directly on the servers ?

hope this helps

How the servers are identify themselfes in the top of the homepage ? Correct system type or unknown ? If unknowm SNMP is not correct. If correct type I have no further idea.

hope this helps

Homepage from Links in the Unmanaged device, after logging in, shows correct in. Just seems that SIM can't gather data.

Hello

I belive that you checked SNMP setings many times but something is wrong with SNMP. Don't forget that SNMP community string is case-sensitiv!

Ok, must be. Noticed that it says Management Protocols SMH:1 on the device page.

Re: Servers howing as Unmanaged (but others are!)

Sorted!!!! The community names were Public when they should be public.

Whats the general feeling about changing the defaults? Our network is behind a firewall but servers are open to workstations used by kids, teachers etc..

Re: Servers howing as Unmanaged (but others are!)

I set up my snmp trap under a new name and made it Read/Write. Make sure you send traps to itself (localhost) and the SIM server. Restarting the snmp service should restart all the HP agents. Make sire in SIM in the default community strings for snmp that you add the new name and leave public and private there. Needed to find your printers and network switches.
