SIM 4.1 SP1 - False System Unreachable Alerts
I have an issue, along with many other SIM users it appears, regarding false ‘System is unreachable’ alerts from HP SIM 4.1 SP1.
I am in the process of upgrading from Insight Manager 5.20 which used SNMP only for server management. This version could be used easily through a firewall and did not involve the complications, errors and problems (such as DCOM in the eventlog) like SIM 4.1. False alerts from the management station are a real problem as this will eventually cause people to ignore genuine alerts. I have played around with both the global and local Ping (ICMP) settings with no luck. The servers are behind a firewall connected at 100MB but I have also had alerts from some servers not behind the firewall which the Insight Manager 5.20 (running in parallel) does not generate alerts for. Also the device inaccessible is only for the Ping protocol and not for SNMP. I am using the ICMP TCP port 80 option for supposed ease of use with a firewall. This problem is definitely not due to network traffic or load. Although I appreciate the SIM changes will have been necessary to accommodate web based management of servers it makes the overall administration product awkward. My request to the developers of SIM is to allow the ICMP reachability check to be turned off globally. This will give system administrators the option to manage servers via SNMP only cutting out these false positives. SNMP traps and inaccessibility alarms would certainly be sufficient in my case. I have trawled through these forums and seen many of the alleged fixes but none have worked for me. This includes changing the timeout and retry intervals under Options, Protocol Setings, System Protocol Settings as suggested in a previous post. I am aware that SIM 4.2 is available but it appears other users have exactly the same problem with this version. Any suggestions or help would be much appreciate
