SIM and SMS

Does anyone have a good solution to handdle sending alerts via sms messages to a GSM mobile. I don't mind using 3rd party apps.
I would appreciate it if you can also describe how you accomplished this either through a batch file etc.

Re: SIM and SMS

As long as you're all set up in Options->Events->Automatic Event Handling->Modem Settings, and you've got a modem hooked up, you're all set.

You need to get the access code for your local cellular provider. I don't know where you are, but this page might help:

http://www.intellisoftware.co.uk/products/transports/tap-protocol-numbers.aspx

SIM *only* supports the TAP protocol - the US standard, but many European providers support this. Be sure they do, though because it will error if it tries to negotiate the wrong protocol.

For each user you want to receive alerts, you must set up their account with details of the provider's access number (telephone number) and the user's GSM number (put this in the field called 'pin number'). The baud rate and data format must match your modem and the provider's specification, but in Europe, you're probably safe with 57600 baud and 8 data, no parity, 1 stop.

Re: SIM and SMS

I have set this up but currently do not receive any pages. I receive the email notification but not the pages.Where can I see find log files to troubleshoot this?

My European provider supports UCP but unofficially they say from tap version 1.8 it should work as well.

Re: SIM and SMS

If you have it all set up, then the problem is almost certainly your provider. SIM *will not* work with UCP - only TAP. Which provider are you using? One more question - is yours a standard PSTN or ISDN modem?

Re: SIM and SMS

I am located in the Netherland and I am using a standard pstn modem.

I have found the number of a different provider and they are listed to support the TAP protocol. So far nothing is coming through. I tested the line and I can dial out using the AT commands. I would like to examine the log file but I don't see any log file that relates to this in the logs folder.

Re: SIM and SMS

I never found anything useful in any logs either! I use the Proximus service here in Belgium and it works fine. If you want to try it to be sure, the access number is +32475161621 and setting is 8,n,1. If you are sending to an international number (which you will be!) it takes the format 31nnnnnnn *not* 0031nnnnnnn or +31nnnnnnn. If it works, you will know that your provider is not supporting TAP.

The fact that you can connect doesn't mean much unless the protocol is correct.

Even if you use 3rd party apps, if your provider is not supporting TAP, you will get a similar result (normally "TAP login rejected" or similar).

My last input would be to check the line speed of the provider's modem - some run at 2400 or 9600 baud only, so 56k/v.90 may be too much for them.

Good luck!

Re: SIM and SMS

Hmm it seems I can't get SIM to dial out. For testing purposes I put in as phone and pin number my own mobile number. I assume that at least my mobile phone should ring if SIM tries to use the pager. Nothing actually ahppens, while I have connected it to the correct com port.

when I use hyperterminal I can connect to my mobile. Besides the correct com port are there any other setings?

Re: SIM and SMS

Correction, SIM connects to my mobile. Just needed to restart the services as it does not apply the new user settings untill restarted. I am going to try the belgium provider settings

Re: SIM and SMS

I tried the belgium SMSC but it does not seem to support sending international sms.

None of the SMSC in holland support the TAP protocol they only support the UCP protocol.

Does anybodyknow if HP is going to support SMS instead of only paging?
I have not found any good 3rd party application either that will support SIM to send SMS. Does anyone know any application which does? Or an SMS gateway which supports TAP via Dial inn access?
