Some SNMP Traps not received

I know there are already articles out there like this regarding Insight Manager 7. However, I think my issue differs because I can receive test traps from my servers with HP management agents to my Insight Manager server. I can get polling interval traps when the server is rebooted. So I know I have the right community string and connectivity. However, I don't get traps for other events such as failed disks (cpqida.mib). I do have those other MIBs registered and they are enabled for trap handling (and set as critical). I thought I would throw this out there and see if anyone has seen this before or maybe I missed something. Unfortunately I am the one who put Insight Mgr in place and the first disk failure was not caught, which doesn't look too good.

Re: Some SNMP Traps not received

If a Server goes down HPSIM detects that by ping not working. It then generates an event.

If a disk fails then the HP Agent detects the failure and generates an SNMP Trap.

Check the Trap Destination in your SNMP Service Settings, that needs to point back to the HPSIM Server.
From the Command Console, run up the HP Management Agents GUI, that has a Trap Send feature, that should generate a Major Alert on the HPSIM Server.

Re: Some SNMP Traps not received

Thanks. The event versus the trap makes sense. However, I can get a test SNMP trap thru using the HP System Management Homepage - just not a "real" SNMP trap.

Re: Some SNMP Traps not received

Go to Options->Events->SNMP Settings.

Make sure that the traps that you are expecting to receive, i.e. cpqida.mib, are setup correctly. Also, how are you expecting to receive the alerts? Just through the Insight homepage, or email or pager settings?

Re: Some SNMP Traps not received

Basically on "server A" I run an SNMP test trap from that server and see the test on my SIM server homepage. But if I then go to server A and pull a hard drive for a failure, I don't see the trap. The MIBs are registered and set with the defaults - I have not changed them. I am capturing network traffic and see the SNMP packets arriving on the SIM server, which is why I suspect I am missing something on the Insight Mangager as an application. I am trying to get the traps to the manager homepage and also use email notification.

Re: Some SNMP Traps not received

Hmm, go to your control panel and open up the Hp management agents. Make sure that you don't have any inactive agents that are related to drives failure. the only innactive agents that you should see are "Cluster information" if the server is not a cluster server, "Rack information" <-- I don't use this and remote insight if you don't have a RILOE or ILO board.

If that is the issue, make the agents active by adding them to the active agents window.

If they are already there, move them to the innative window, click on to restart snmp then readd all of them back in.

Let me if that helps.

Re: Some SNMP Traps not received

All of the agents were active except for cluster, RILO, and rack info. I removed them and it prompted me to restart the agents. I recycled SNMP and then added back the agents as "active" but it did not help.

My backup plan is to use Event Notifier which seems to be giving me the results I am looking for. But I still wanted to get the SNMP piece working.

Re: Some SNMP Traps not received

Out of interest, what kind of array / disks?
Versions of HPSIM, OS, PSP?

If the SNMP Trap is being sent via the GUI, then that would indicate nothing is picking up the event on the Server.

Re: Some SNMP Traps not received

The HPSIM server is a Proliant DL380 running Windows Server 2003 HPSIM version is HP 7 SP2 (agents are 7.30.0)

My test server to cause failures with is a Proliant ML530 using a Smart Array 5300. This server is running Windows 2000 Server with HP Mgmt Agents 7.20.0. Disks are Ultra3 SCSI

The production server that had a failed disk, whose SNMP trap I did not get either, is an HP DL380 G3 running Windows 2000 Server, HP Mgmt Agents 7.20.0. The controller is a 5i with Ultra3 SCSI disks

Re: Some SNMP Traps not received

I have the same problem where I will have servers that have had numerous problems that are indicated in their IM Logs. When I check the SIM server there are no corresponding events. Test traps do not create events either in SIM.

snmputil shows that the sim server is receiving the traps but its not creating events for the traps.

I am using SIM 5 SP2. Any ideas?

Re: Some SNMP Traps not received

I have both a SIM5 upgraded to SP3 server (W2K) and a fresh W2K3 SIM5SP3 server. The new one is supposed to replace the old one on short notice.
However, the new one does not create events from traps. SNMPUTIL shows it is receiving test traps fired from any managed server. So the server is receiving traps, but SIM is not or ignores them. But SIM is configured to receive all traps, even unregistered ones.
The only events it creates are results from polling like "system unreachable".
This looks similar to the last posted message.

Re: Some SNMP Traps not received

I'm having a similar problem. However different. Most of my servers can send a generic, disk threshold, whatever TRAP then ends up being an event and gets "handled" (ie Emailed & Cleared) However I have several servers that send the trap, and an event is created, but the event is never HANDLED.

Really weird. Any ideas?

Re: Some SNMP Traps not received

Michael,

Did you ever find a fix for your problem? I have a very similar problem with Systems Insight Manager 5... See my recent post..

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=1037909

I've used the MXMIB command (windows) and can see that only a small percentage or traps within the MIB (or CFG) file actually get loaded into SIM when you compile and register the MIB.

Thanks,

I have a simular problem to all of you in this thread, bumped for justice!

Re: Some SNMP Traps not received

I "solved" the issue by selecting all systems, and explicitly "Resumed monitoring" and they started kicking in. Even though SIM didn't have monitoring suspended... Really wierd

Re: Some SNMP Traps not received

Hi,

I've the same probleme as Wijnand.
I've reccently installed a new HP SIM 5.3 sp1 on a Windows 2003 VM. The discovery Work Fine and the Status Polling work fine too. When, from a HP Proliant HP Management Agent i send a snmp tra test. It's work well. But noting appear on the SIM console when i configure vmware VC to send trap ti HP SIM server, or when i HP Lefthand P4300 are configured to send SNMP to HP SIM but nothing appear. I've try to manually send a snmp trap with trapgen -d "myhpsimserver", and nothing appear.
In HP SIM i've allow "Accept unregistered events " but nothin change.

Does Someone could help me.

Thanks.

Re: Some SNMP Traps not received

Hi,

Finally the SNMP from VMware Virtual Center and from the snmp trap test (trapgen) will appear in the HP SIM Console. But the Lefthand P4300 still doesn't appear when an snmp trap is generated. However, on the HP Sim server with a Netmon i can see the snmp trap arrive to the server, but it doesn't display in the HP SIM.

Re: Some SNMP Traps not received

Verify the community names are an exact match, they are case sensitive.
Also check what version of SNMP traps are being sent. Can't recall off hand but there are some restrictions.

Re: Some SNMP Traps not received

No i've set and check the community string, is "public" and i can see them in the network monitor.
And it seems to be Snmp V1.
