System Event notifier agent

What does this agent do? I know this sounds like a dumb question, but this agent is disabled on my managed boxes, yet I'm still receiving all events traps from those boxes. I'm wondering what I am missing out on with this disabled. Before I can turn it on I need to justify the necessity to the security team.
