Systems insight manager re-install

I was forced to do a reinstall of my SIM 4.0 installation. I am running SIM 4.0 with the databases on an external SQL 2000 server.

I noticed that SIM 4.0 nor 4.1 gives the option to use the current database. SIM 4.0 wants to overwrite it and SIM 4.1 creates a new database with a different name (does not tries to overwrite the old one).

I used a workaround to overcome this problem by detaching the database from the sql server and backing up both the database and logfiles in a diffent location. After the new installation of SIM 4.0 I detached the newly created databases and replaced them with the old databases. This works fine. What I need to know is if SIM 4.0 also stores specific configuration files locally on the server as well. I made a backup of the local installation directory so I do have the old config directory in case needed.

Any help which files to copy would be very helpfull.

Re: Systems insight manager re-install

All SIM configurations are kept in C:\Program Files\HP\Systems Insight Manager\config and all it's subdirectories. Assuming SIM was installed on the C drive.

Re: Systems insight manager re-install

Problem is there is an error in one of the config files in my old config directory which forced me to reinstall SIM. I did copy the entire old config dir to the new (working) config dir buit this resulted in the old error returning. The problem I had is that it keeps asking for the JRE to be installed while it is properly installed. I did see in the forum others had this problem as well but I didn't see any solution that worked. So I choose to reinstall after the HP helpdesk was not able to solve the problem.
While not being able to reinstall the entire config directory I would like to know whether specific configurations like eventhandling are stored locally or within the SQL database. My customized system list was stored in the database but I am doublechecking if I have lost any configuration settings. It's pretty hard to check everything with over 200 HP servers spread in various locations. We have customized various things and some things I have inherrited from my preceder.

Hopefully you can elaborated a bit further into more detail as copying the entire config dir does not do the trick :(

Thanks for any insight :)

Re: Systems insight manager re-install

I wish I could be more specific. It seems that most of the installation specific files are in the actual config directory and the sshtools subdirectory.

np thanks for your help, I was hoping I didn't had to check and compare all individual files.

Re: Systems insight manager re-install

Some additional information.
It seems that some of the configuration is stored locally.
My automatic event handling is still working but the SMTP information was not stored within the database. Due to this Email notification was not working (apparantly stored locally). My clusterinformation is gone as well but my old taks and rules based on this information are still working.
I can see all my old tasks but can not edit them. I can not create new tasks, only tells me there is an error but does not specify why I can't. Does anyone know where the clusterinformation is stored? even if it is in the SQL database can anyone tell me which tables I can find the info? Besides cluster information I would also like to know where the tasks are stored within the database?

It would be helpfull if in the next version all (task) information is stored within the database, minimizing the workload for large organisations in case of disaster recovery.
Let me rephrase that, the information is stored within the SQL database but it does require undocumented local editing of config files to obtain these settings. It would save time if I know which file to look for.

Hehe I might as well add some additional points :) The SQL SIM database can be accessed by multiple servers. This is helpfull to add as a feature, currently it requires lots of manual tweaking and hacking to accomplish this. The reason is that I prefer to have one SIM server running locally on each continent storing information in a centralized database. Monitoring certain locations via sattelite links is not very bandwidth efficient via the WAN. I don't believe it is that hard to include within a next version.

Eventhough there are limitations my compliments for what is already possible within this great product.
