Workstation with windows2000 and insight manager...

Hi All,

This is a question divided in two parts (but I suspect the solution is only one)

1.- I need to know if there is a way to monitor workstations (with windows 2000 professional and windows XP professional) from within Insight manager console (as you do with the proliant servers for example)

2.- I can monitor several proliant servers (some of them with windows NT4.0 and others with windows 2000 adv server)and ALL desktops running windos NT 4.0 server. But when we start to upgrade the latter(the desktops acting as servers) to windows 2000 adv server we try to install the "Compaq Support Pack for windows 2000 version 5.05a" and get an error message that tells that this software is not "needed" in this machine, so I installed in those desktops the intelligent management agent ver 5.01 a3 but it was not added automatially nor can I add manually to the Insight console

I've tried using CIM version 5.3 and insight manager 7 sp2 in the console side and intelligent management ver 5.01 a3 in the other side, but I'm unable to see the workstations (runnig windows 2000 pro, windows 2000 adv server and windows XP pro) in the discovered devices at console. But I´m able to see the desktops running windows NT 4.0 server...

The desktops are Deskpro EN (used as utility servers such as IPP servers, DHCP, Arcserve, etc) The workstations we are interested to monitor are EVO's 530 and several portables EVO N610

So the second part of the question is : is possible to monitor desktops running windows 2000 adv server from within Insight Manager console?

Any idea would be very appreciated.

Re: Workstation with windows2000 and insight manager...

Install the HP Insight Agents for Desktops on the workstations you wish to monitor. You will probably also need to install SNMP service on them as well to get the most out of it.

You should be able to monitor them with any Insight Manager version.

Re: Workstation with windows2000 and insight manager...

Hi James, thanks for your promptly response and time.

Precisely the link you gave to us is to download the insight management agents 5.01, which, as I mentioned, had been already installed in several machines (and of course, the SNMP service in all of them)

Let me give the scenario :

1.- One machine running CIM 5.03 (the console) which can manage several Windows NT4 servers (3 deskpros and 2 Proliants), windows 2000 (2 Proliants) and netware/SPX servers(2 Proliants with Netware 4.11 SP9), it can send alarms via SMTP, Pager, works wonderful!

2.- One Deskpro EN running windows 2000 professional, up to date with the MS update system (SP4 and patches), the SNMP service up and running, the Insight Management Agent version 5.03 (your hyperlink) which has already pass the SNMP simulate trap test, DMI 2.0.

3.- One Deskpro EN with all the above except that is running Windows 2000 Advanced Server.

4.- A portable EVO N600c with windows XP Pro SP1 with SNMP service and the Insight Management Agent 5.03 intalled on it.

5.- Yesterday I installed other deskpro with Insight Manager 7 SP2, the web based console. (was inable to see the Netware servers, but I haven't work this issue yet)

None of the consoles, the ver 5.03 nor the 7Sp2, are able to "see" the windows 2000/XP Deskpros/Evos mentioned above.

So the question is :

Is possible that the deskpros/portable running Windows 2000/XP be able to be managed from Insight Manager? (specially the one running as server, keep in mind I have to upgrade 3 other deskpro servers to windows 2000 adv svr)
If so...what I'm doing wrong? (because is not working for me)

Thanks again for your time!

Re: Workstation with windows2000 and insight manager...

You should be able to monitor any Compaq/HP desktop or server using Insight Manager 7, regardless of the OS; Windows XP, Windows 2000 Pro or Server, does not matter as long as they have SNMP and the Insight Agents loaded.

I find it very odd that you are unable to monitor these devices. When you manually add the devices to IM7, what does it show for the device in the list? Does they come up blue or red?

Make sure the IM7 machine can properly ping the devices by name.

To monitor netware devices, assuming you still run IPX, make sure you have the IPX protocol loaded on the IM7 server and then set the IM7 auto-discovery enabled on IPX. This will discover every IPX netware server on your network.

Re: Workstation with windows2000 and insight manager...

Hello again James!

I have been working with the IM7 and now I can see the workstations (it was a matter of filters in the main view, I disable them and the workstations appear :-) altough I have to add it manually. But now I have a bunch of devices (from other offices), how can I delete from my view?

The only problem now is with the netware servers, which are displayed but not open as the Windows servers (not all the features active) but this is another issue, if I cannot solve it i will open another question in the forum.

Is there any way to add this devices to the CIM 5.03? to me is more user friendly, easy and faster than the IM7 , and works quite well with the netware servers. (I add the device manually to the 5.03 and it appears few seconds in the list and then dissapear...)

(Maybe an intermediate version...6 or something)

Thanks a lot for the help!

Re: Workstation with windows2000 and insight manager...

With a similar issue, (in CIM 7 SP2) I found that you need to either setup a custom device query that only shows the devices you want to monitor as your default view or disable Automatic Discovery and then delete all the unwanted devices from the database. Either way if at a later date you remove or add systems to your infrastructure that you want to monitor, you will have to make some manual adjustments to CIM7 sp2 (either manual discovery or change the custom device query)

Re: Workstation with windows2000 and insight manager...

Oops mistakely I said in my last reply that I'm using CIM 5.03 actually is 5.30. I dowload the CIM 5.50 but doesn´t work either. (Accordingly with the readme the 5.50 is the last CIM, sob!)

So, welcome IM7 slower or not....(or should I say netware or not? je je)
