DL380 Gen11 Disk configuration

Hello community,

We have a BTO server HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11 4514Y 2.0GHz 16-core 1P 32GB-R MR408i-o NC 8SFF 1000W.

It comes with MR408i-o controller and 1 8SFF drive cage. We needed to have support for  10 drives so we ordered below.

  • HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11 2U 8SFF x1 Tri-Mode U.3 Drive Cage Kit
  • HPE MR416i-p Gen11 x16 Lanes 8GB Cache PCI SPDM Plug-in Storage Conroller.

When we try using the 416i-p controller to manage the drives, only 2 disks are seen instead of 10.

What could be te issue.

Re: DL380 Gen11 Disk configuration

Dear otyheno1

As per your given information, you have installed HPE MR416i-p Gen11 x16 Lanes 8GB Cache PCI SPDM Plug-in Storage Controller, So it will support  16 nos drives without expander. but unfortunately you are not able to get HDDs. there is only 2 HDD showing. As per my opinion, Please check the SAS able connection, It is suspected that SAS cables are not connected properly. That is why all eight drives are not visible.

Hope,  I could provide you with clear and helpful instructions. If you have any more questions or need further assistance, don't hesitate to ask. I'm here to help!

Have a great day!

@rabindra11sharm

Thanks for your response.

The server is  P70457-421 and it comes preconfigured with MR408i-o controller and 8sff drive cage.

We need to have 10 SAS drives so we ordered MR416i-p controller and an additional 8sff drive cage.

How do we connect inorder for the 416i-p to manage all the 10 drives in the 2 cages.

@otyheno1

To connect the MR416i-p controller to manage all 10 drives across two 8SFF cages in your HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11, you can give a try to below instructions:

Disconnect the MR408i-o controller and its cables from the first 8SFF cage>> Connect the MR416i-p controller to both drive cages using appropriate SAS cables [ Port 1 of MR416i-p → Cage 1 (original 8SFF cage) and Port 2 of MR416i-p → Cage 2 (additional 8SFF Tri-Mode U.3 cage)]>>

Set both drive cages to Unified Mode (if applicable) to ensure all drives are visible.>> Disable the MR408i-o controller in the BIOS/UEFI to avoid conflicts.>> Update firmware for the MR416i-p, drive cages, and server BIOS using the latest HPE SPP>> Verify in HPE Smart Storage Administrator (SSA) that the MR416i-p detects all 10 drives and configure RAID as needed.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you need more help.
