Intelligent Provisioning - Using the Erase Utility for decommissioning process

According to information  the following feature is available on BIOS after 2011 and can be accessed  via ILO. So looks like it will be available on all server hardware  being decomisioned.

Steps are described here:

https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docLocale=en_US&docId=c05147771

However looks like appliacble only on magnetic drives. (DoD 5220.22-M) . using on SSD it will shorten lifespan.(In the case of reusage.).

Can someone confirm  or advice?

Re: Query: Intelligent Provisioning - Using the Erase Utility for decommissioning process

Thank you for info provided.Yes in the case of this GEN 10 it will work apparently. Problem here is we trying to do decomissioning remotely via ILO annd also we need some confirmation evidence we dit this procedure. It is not clear from documentation if we loose remote connectivity and if there is some log  or output we can use for evidence.?

But we still have portfolie of other models and generations. G7,G8,G9,i2,i4..

Also do you offer ILO cards simulators for all models se I check what is available  in every generation regarding erasure/reset?

Re: Query: Intelligent Provisioning - Using the Erase Utility for decommissioning process

Hi

Intelligent Provisioning option available from Gen8 onwards system, The Intelligent Provisioning provides secure erase functionality for the internal system storage and hard disks following the guidelines outlined in DoD 5220.22-M. Secure erase overwrites all block devices attached to the system through applying random patterns in a three-pass process. These block devices include hard disks, storage systems attached to the server, as well as the internal storage used by iLO. Depending on the amount of storage installed on a system, the secure erase process can take many hours or even days to complete.

Re: Query: Intelligent Provisioning - Using the Erase Utility for decommissioning process

@AmRa

Thank you. So if if sum up the information you provoided. From Gen 8  magnetic disks erase is supported. (DoD 5220.22-M) . This cannot be applied on SSD  disks . Or it can be but this technique is not recomended for SSD. . From Gen 10  both SSD and magnetic disks are supported.  There is no evidence report/log generated. Doing that activity via ILO card will clear the ILO configuration in and remote connectivity to ILO will be lost in the end. However  decom. activity will be completed.

Is that correct conclusion?

Re: Query: Intelligent Provisioning - Using the Erase Utility for decommissioning process

From Gen 10 server both SSD and magnetic disks are supported. There will be no evidence report/log generated for the activity.
However, for Gen8, there is no exact documentation available that is specific to SSD disk support in Intelligent Provisioning Erase Utility.
Hence we would suggest to raise a support ticket with HPE tech support to test this configuration in the HPE lab server.

Or

You can avail of HPE technical consultancy services for the decommissioned server to get proper documentation on the disk erase activity and other.
