The Basics of Storage Networking - Stuff You Need to Know

Most servers today are deployed with Operating Systems that leverage virtual server technology. In many cases, this means the servers are connecting to some sort of shared storage device to optimize access to storage resources. That means there is a storage network that sits between the servers and the shared storage device.

Challange is that there is very little training available these days on storage networking technologies. It's not a big topic in universities and it is not "rock star" technology, so you can't find much in the HPE training systems either. Even if you can find something on say Fibre Channel or iSCSI connectivity, it is very dated.

With lots of new individuals entering the IT arena at HPE and in the Channel, the HPE team at Marvell saw a gap in general storage networking knowledge that needed to be filled. To address this, we created a series of short videos focusd on storage networking basics. We call this our Follow the Wire series and it is available now on YouTube. Topics include;

  • What is Storage Networking
  • What is Fibre Channel
  • Fibre Channel or Ethernet - Which do I choose?
  • Basics of NVMe over Fabrics
  • Transitioning to NVMe over Fibre Channel

You can access the playlist here: Follow the Wire | Marvell Technology - YouTube

We hope you find resourcces like this valueable. We are working on additional topics and if there are specific topics you would like to see added to this collection, please drop me a line or email hpesolutions@marvell.com.

Three additional videos have been added to this collection.

*Port Isolation - technology that delivers predictable Fibre Channel performance

* Universal SAN Congestion Mitigation - technology at the forefront of delivering self-driving SANs

* Virtual Machine ID - giving administrators visibility to Fibre Channel workflow at the virtual machine level
