VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 4.0 Validated to Run on HPE Synergy

According to a 2019 IDC report, 500 million digital apps and services will be deployed using cloud-native approaches. Keep in mind, this is the same number of apps developed in the last 40 years! And with that many apps in development, businesses are looking for ways to simplify and speed the process.

One way organizations are becoming more agile in app development is by using containers for new applications in the cloud. The problem is that most enterprise applications are running on prem on VMware vSphere virtual machines. And re-architecting these applications to move to the cloud is time-consuming and expensive; therefore, most of these essential workloads are remaining on prem.

Working in two environments is more complex, time-consuming, and expensive. Enterprises want the capability to run containers and virtual machines in one environment.

VMware Cloud Foundation 4.0 running on HPE Synergy – now available

VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) running on HPE Synergy composable infrastructure helps solve this challenge. This validation is the latest example of HPE’s commitment to enabling customers to bring the cloud experience to their data center. Mutual customers keep all their applications, tools, and data in place, while achieving the benefits of cloud and composable infrastructure.

With VCF 4.0, customers have a single platform that consolidates VMs with an embedded Kubernetes runtime environment for container orchestration, simplifying and speeding application development, deployment and ongoing operations. A single, flexible platform spanning multiple clouds allows companies to take advantage of new business opportunities in a faster, easier, and more cost-effective way.

Why is this latest news important?

Modern apps require infrastructure that supports all their components. Without an adaptive infrastructure, developers and IT operators often struggle to provide the services that apps require. Developers often lack services within the organization such as modern coding tools and backend databases.

IT operators also face several challenges. They must ensure the right infrastructure is deployed and configured correctly as defined by the interfaces. Provisioning resources is also difficult due to infrastructure silos managed by different teams such as servers, storage, and networking. Security is another big worry, as isolation of modern apps from sensitive databases is difficult. Lastly, inconsistent operations and cross-functional workflows can be concerning because they add complexity.

VCF helps solve these challenges by providing a universal platform that consolidates VMs and containers into a single platform. And because it is available on HPE Synergy, customers have the added benefits of using a modern composable infrastructure that can re-allocate resources instantly to meet the needs of any workload.

Brief recap: Why VCF and HPE Synergy? 

Before I go into the specifics of what’s new in VCF, I’d like to summarize the benefits of a hybrid cloud solution that combines VCF with HPE Synergy composable infrastructure.

VMware’s VCF is an integrated software-defined stack, extending across private and public cloud environments and offering a single user experience for both. All of the self-service capabilities and automated provisioning features typically associated with off-premises infrastructure are available on premises, and you can easily migrate VMs across those environments.

HPE Synergy lets IT teams compose resources in an instant, dynamically configuring them to meet the needs of VCF workloads -- and scale when needed. This capability enables IT and developers to spin up new resources quickly using a simple bit of code – resulting in faster application provisioning.

By combining both VCF with HPE Synergy, you get a fully virtualized private cloud, based on modern composable infrastructure. This on-premises solution also can be consumed as a service through HPE’s ecosystem of public cloud service providers, enabling you to easily build a hybrid cloud environment that leverages existing skill sets and processes.

What exactly is new with VCF 4.0? What’s the benefit?

VCF with Tanzu includes an embedded Kubernetes runtime (Tanzu Kubernetes Grid) within vSphere, giving developers an automated, full-stack infrastructure with developer-ready APIs. It also provides a single platform for VMs and containers – providing simplicity so you don’t have to switch between two different platforms. Simplified management using namespaces to manage app resources is also new for VCF 4.0.

VCF delivers the lowest total cost of ownership against both 3-tier architectures and even public cloud alternatives. By establishing a private cloud solution that delivers consistent infrastructure and operations for all your VMs and containerized apps, you get a hybrid cloud model that provides workload mobility and a consistent developer experience
