World-record performance at scale on the HPE Superdome Flex with SAP ERP delivered
HPE Superdome Flex is the first system to break the 640 logical processors barrier on the Microsoft Windows operating system on an SAP ERP OLTP benchmark. Learn how this gives Windows SAP scale-up customers an edge.
When you deploy SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) OLTP applications on Windows, youโre looking for strong performance, proper scaling, and digital transformation. This requires modernizing applications, simplifying operations, and streamlining deployments.
Itโs also true that a significant portion of SAP deployments run on Windows. Until now, customers running previous versions of Windows could not scale beyond 640 logical processors in a single system. They previously experienced a hard limit in seeking to scale to 16 Intel processors in a single platform on Windows with SAP ERP OLTP applications.
If youโve been wanting to scale up, youโve been waiting for a Windows OS version to take business to the next level. Iโm happy to say that the waiting is over: The single-system scale-up platform from HPE and the latest Windows OS can meet these requirements.
Addressing scale-up requirements in a Windows SAP environment using HPE Superdome Flex
Today, Iโm sharing the recent benchmark on 16 processors on a single platform with the newest version of Windows. This benchmark models business processed line order items in an invoice creation scenario. The technology partnership of HPE, Microsoft, and SAP brought this solution together, delivering a more responsive and scalable platform as a breakthrough at the edge of possibility. (See more details on the benchmark in the information at the end of this blog.)
Many customers require strong SAP OLTP ERP performance in Windows environments and prefer the capability to scale up on a single system now or in the future. Look no further than HPE Superdome Flex.
On the two-tier SAP Sales and Distribution (SD) Standard Application Benchmark, the platform has achieved the world record 16-processor Windows result, configured with Microsoft Windows 2019.1 These benchmark results join a history of continuing evidence that HPE Superdome Flex delivers leadership performance for enterprise workloads. For scale-up single-system SAP ERP OLTP Windows environments, literally no other vendor can touch this accomplishment.
Solution highlights
The 16-processor system achieved 877,050 fully processed business line items per hour, a metric referred to as SAPS, and showed a capability to support 152,508 benchmark users. This breakthrough sets a new standard for SAP ERP and joins a list of prior benchmark accomplishments. Together, these are continuing evidence that HPE Superdome Flex delivers leadership performance for enterprise workloads.
Leaving the competition far behind, this achievement is the only 16-processor Windows results using Intelยฎ Xeonยฎ scalable processors as of the date of benchmark publication. The most recent 16-processor Windows result from another vendor was published in 2009. This illustrates the solution stack:
HPE, Microsoft, and SAP solution technology combined
HPE and our technology partners have a decades-long history of collaborative success. Close cooperation forms the groundwork for innovations that matter to customers. With this solid foundation, customers can rely on HPE server benchmark performance results to support deployment planning.
HPE, a market leader in SAP deployments with leading market share in SAP HANA, has always produced innovations to make its computing platform solutions aligned to a broad range of customer needs and to equip environments of all sizes. With close strategic technological partner collaboration, HPE provides innovative systems that not only scale up physically but that also continuously address the expectations of the most demanding customers by providing performance at scale, which is unique to HPE.
- Microsoft Windows 2019 brings enhanced security, faster app innovation, and unprecedented performance. HPE Superdome Flex provides the platform for data-intensive applications, with the availability necessary for mission-critical data solutions.
- Microsoft SQL Server 2019, new to the market, was chosen as the database to support this configuration. This version of SQL Server delivers performance improvements to the core database engine, playing a significant part in enabling greater workload performance.
- HPE 3PAR StorServ 8400 Storage Module, with its flash-optimized data storage system that brings performance gains, played a supporting role in the performance results. The module was configured with 48 x 3.5-inch SSDs.
Timely provision of performance data to meet customer needs
HPE is here with timely benchmark results. No other vendor has released a result to match this prowess. Huawei and IBM each have a 16P x86 solution, but not as a single system, and have not published any 16P results on Windows. A significant portion of SAP installations run on Windows, and the needs of this customer base must be addressed. HPE has been the first to demonstrate excellent performance on this many logical processorsโ896โin a Windows environment, opening the way for SAP customers to scale up in a single system on their preferred OS. These benchmark performance results are proof points for customers seeking the ability on an ERP OLTP workload to achieve maximum business processed line items in a single multiprocessor platform. Read the SAP SD standard application benchmark performance brief.
Highest-performing platform for SAP use cases
HPE Superdome Flex is the most scalable and performant mission-critical platform for SAP use cases. In addition to its performance leadership on the SAP SD standard application benchmark, there are three scale-up results on the SAP Business Warehouse (SAP BW), edition for SAP HANAยฎ standard application benchmark. These are additional objective proof points for customersโ deployment decisions in SAP environments.

- World record overall and 32P performance on 41.6 billion initial records
- World record results with 16 processors on 41.6 billion initial records
- World record results with 16 processors on 20.8 billion initial records
The innovative combination of the HPE Superdome Flex and technology from Microsoft has delivered world record results on an SAP ERP OLTP performance benchmark. The latest benchmark results are proof points showing customers how to take better advantage of the HPE Superdome Flex scale-up potential in an SAP/Windows environment. Customers running SAP OLTP workloads can move forward with confidence after seeing this objective evidence of the unique ability to run Windows and scale up to 16 x86 processors on a single system at high levels of business line item processing power.

About the SAP SD standard application benchmark
This benchmark shows a serverโs capability for processing business line items in ERP environments. The SAP SD standard application benchmark models a sell-from stock scenario creating a customer order with five line items and corresponding delivery with subsequent goods movement and invoicing. Results show the number of users, response time, and the amount of fully business processed order line items per hour (SAPS). The benchmark can help to determine sizing requirements.
