Re: EX490 Recovery Disc

I was able to access the drive directly through the network without using the server console.  I can see the folders but none of the information in the folders, which I am assuming is because it is locked because it was a backup.  When I try to use the server console, it gives me an error that it can not connect.  I have tried to restart the server and it doesn't work.  What does not make sense is that I can access the drive directly but I can't connect to it through the server console.

Below is another error I received, but not sure if it is from my browser or from the server.

Error Message

It states it cannot connect and asks to restart the server.

I have done this several times but no luck.  I also received the error below.

Server Error in '/Upnp' Application.

Runtime Error

Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
    <system.web>
        <customErrors mode="Off"/>
    </system.web>
</configuration>

Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
    <system.web>
        <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
    </system.web>
</configuration>

My goal is to just get the retrieve the files from the drive.

Re: EX490 Recovery Disc

I'm having issues reloading or reseting as well.   First of all, I'm not sure if i'm in recovery mode since the lights seem to flash blue and red, not purple and red as indicated in the manual, and I get a failure at step 2 every single time...

Not sure how to get pass this or how long to hold down the paper clip at startup as the lights are flashing red and blue.

In addition I'm not sure which box i have, EX490 or EX495 ?

the lights flash - 1 blue - 6 red..... and I'm thinking these are error codes...

Re: EX490 Recovery Disc

I just wanted to share that these discs work on the HP Data Vault x310 and are a bit newer than the version that comes with the server.

Re: EX490 Recovery Disc

I happened to grab a sealed NOS ex49x as a replacement for my aging ex48x. It came with a 1tb 7200.12 Seagate drive, I installed the VGA/mouse/keyboard and it boots up no worries. So far no personal data has been added.

My problems started by trying to upgrade the primary drive to a RE4 WD1003FBYX (without advance format).  The little 49x won't cooperate with a reset to begin the install of the OS (using the recovery disk). I started by setting my public, private, and domain firewall to disabled and the Lan port at the back has a solid green with a separate blinking amber LED. Ive followed the following steps below to begin the install/recovery process:

1) Start PC (mine is running w7) in safe-mode with networking enabled, 2) Set PC IP address to 169.37.37.40, 3) Connect PC to server with straight-thru network cable bypassing any hubs and switches in line., 4) Start server Recovery software on PC from "Server Recovery" CD. Reboot Server and go into recovery mode. (Use paper clip to press button on front panel of server within 4 seconds or so of powering it up.)

This is where the problem starts. When the blank formated RE drive (with no partitions) is installed, or even with the factory installed Seagate drive installed), the status light never starts blinking aqua and red. It is always blinking blue. On the Seagate drive, I can watch the OS install on my monitor and when done the blinking blue health light then goes solid blue and the drive light also turns on blue.

With the blank formatted RE4 installed, the light blinks blue, the 49x goes thru bios, but the boot stops becuase there is no OS found. The health light remains blinking blue.

Ive tried pressing the reset button with a paper clip just after boot, pulling the primary drive to force the server into recovery and reinstall the drive after 30 seconds, neither do anything. Health light just says blinking blue, on and off.

Am I doing something wrong here? I just cant seem to get the 49x into recovery mode.

Or is there a way to install the OS on my new drive using a terminal install with the hard drive setup by SATA and the DVD running in a DVD drive? That would sure make things easy.

Re: EX490 Recovery Disc

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
I'm really not an expert on the Media server, I simply wrote down what tech
support told me about getting it to work and reloading the OS.

Have you tried removing all formatting on the HD by connecting it via a USB -
SATA adapter on your PC? I seem to recall something about cleaning everything
off the HD first.

Also, it would seem to me that going into recovery mode with the paper clip thru
the hole would have nothing to do with what HD or OS is installed on the server.
Going into setup should be a BIOS function on the server. Have you ascertained
that you're really pressing the little switch inside the hole? Try pressing the
switch with the paper clip and THEN turning the power on.

Good luck,

Re: EX490 Recovery Disc

I just checked the link. I'm the one who uploaded the HP Server disk images.
They all seem to be there. you want to use the Server Recovery disk image to
reload the OS on the server. it's spelled out in the manual and my notes also at
this link.

Re: EX490 Recovery Disc

Hi Tom,

I was totally blown away to find your post listing the .iso images and documentation!

I acquired one of these little guys from a recycle center and want to use it for backups.

 I tried to download the files but they never moved into my download folder.

I would greatly appreciate the help!

 Thank you in advance.

Re: EX490 Recovery Disc

You shouldn't need individual permission to download the disk images.

Here is the link:  https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0BzRIeI12rXCDNXNlWFdzY29JYm8?usp=sharing

Make sure you used the one on Google Drive. There was an older set on DropBox but people were having trouble with it. This one should work.

Re: EX490 Recovery Disc

Hi,
I'm not sure I understand your question.

What is not working?

I do not understand why you're moving anything from C:\Program files to D:\Program Files.  The home server is a backup for your computer. You should not have to move anything.

Re: EX490 Recovery Disc

Just a quick thank you to Tom. for the Ex490 downloads.

I just got hold of a second-hand Ex490 and sort of had it working and then I got the steady red health light!! I think the operating system on the 1tb hdd is corrupt (drive may be failing, when directly connected to PC (hdd caddy)  its in and out of disk manager etc. Anyway, I at least have a starting point with Tom's downloads. Will keep you posted.

Thanks Tom :-)

Re: EX490 Recovery Disc

I'm not sure what problem/soultion you are referring to. A few years ago my EX490 died. It seemed to be the CPU board. I scoured eBay and found another one and moved my drives and power suppply to that one. It seems to be working OK.

Re: EX490 Recovery Disc

I am in a tough situation and not sure which way to turn.

At some point, we setup the HPMediaSmart Server EX490 on a Blue laptop at my house.  I moved all of my family pictures off of a Red laptop onto the HP MediaSmart server.

However, at some point we weren't able to access it anymore from anything.  I am not sure what happened actually.
Either way, years later...  We now have 3 other laptops.  (We still have the old ones, but they are mostly unusable.)

Now, we have:
Original Blue Windows laptop that has the software but no browser that works or internet access that works.  Possibly corrupted machine.

Silver Windows laptop that has internet, but non of the HP software we needWe tried to access the server via the name and online instructions from this machine, but canтАЩt access it for some reason. The server turns on and looks fine.

Red Laptop, that has nothing on it anymore at all.  But does have internet access and browsers that work.

I am not sure what to do now.
I use a Mac now.  But we do have the Silver Windows Laptop that works fine.
If you don't mind at all and know where I can turn for help, I would appreciate it.

Thank you!

Re: EX490 Recovery Disc

I'm using my server with Win10 without an issue. I also have a WinXP and Win7
connected to it. (Gasp)

Which step 2 are you referring to?

Can you get into recovery mode?

Do you have the Server Manual? Look at pages 7-10 thru 7-12.

Here's a link to all the documentation and software I've uploaded.

Re: EX490 Recovery Disc

I uploaded disk images of all the HP CD's for the EX490 to my Google drive here.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0BzRIeI12rXCDNXNlWFdzY29JYm8?usp=sharing

I do not know if they will work on an EX487 but it's worth a shot. Read the Reload instructions txt file.

Re: EX490 Recovery Disc

I think I am one of the 6 people left on the planet with a functioning Mediasmart Server. Off and on over the years I have looked for the Version 3.0 software for my EX487 and today I decided to take another look after a hard drive problem made me think about it.

I came across this thread that had started in 2013 and thought, "there is no way the links to the software are still valid". I read through the 10 pages of the thread and am amazed that someone else just 2 months ago was also looking for help and there was still someone out there providing it.

Thank you, Tom! I am downloading the software now and have no idea if it will work but I wanted you to know that I, and the other 5 WHS survivors, are very grateful.

Re: EX490 Recovery Disc

Tom,

Thanks for posting the links to the docs, isos and tips!  This helped me recover my EX495!!!

I  have had my HP EX495 for years, and it's been a workhorse, I've replaced my P/S once, a bit noisier, but it works!!!

Take care!

Re: EX490 Recovery Disc

@TomHayesMP

Tom; If you are still out there, you might want to check the files uploaded to Google.  Copied them to my AirGaped machine and attempted to create a DVD.  I got two Norton warnings about viruses attached to the files after the image completed.  It is possible that the virus was on the machine before I imaged the CD, but just thought you might want to know.

Re: EX490 Recovery Disc

Thanks Tom for the disk images, it has been realy helpful. For those of you who are doing recovery I also found the following thread.
https://forums.wsusoffline.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8190&start=40
Since Microsoft no longer supports WHS, someone has created a offline WSUS disk image with all the WHS V1 updates.
