Re: HP DAT72 internal tape drive: Media cannot be detected..

Can you better explain what "not detected" means?

Does the drive physically load the tape? Does it eject it immediately?

Re: HP DAT72 internal tape drive: Media cannot be detected..

The tape drive is installed into HP ML570G3. OS ver: Microsoft Windows 2003 Enterprise Server. The connection is using scsi connection to the scsi controller 1 onboard of HP ML570G3. Able to detect and functioning properly at system level (Device manager -> Tape drives).

The tape media is able to insert into tape drive. It is not rejected and i've checked the media is suitable for the tape drive. The error occurs when i tried doing a backup with the windows backup software. It detects the drive but does not detect the tape.

Error msg: "There is no free media available with the selected tape. Add unused media or click cancel to end operation. Note: It may take up to 60 seconds to recognise new media."

I've tried installing HP Storageworks library and tape tools but it doesn't seem to detect the drive. Hence unable to troubleshoot with the tool.

Help muchly appreciated. Thanks!!

Re: HP DAT72 internal tape drive: Media cannot be detected..

If windows device manager sees the tape drive, then HP L&TT should also see it.

Which SCSI adapter is it connected to? The internal dual channel ultra320?

Can you send the eventlog.ltt file from the logs folder of L&TT to the ltt_team@hp.com mailbox, and then can see if there's any reason why LTT is not recognizing the device?

The LTT issue and media pool issue may be separate. Maybe someone with more experience using native backup in windows can comment if there's anything you need to do to initialize the media.

Re: HP DAT72 internal tape drive: Media cannot be detected..

Hi Leonard

Doesn't the message
Error msg: "There is no free media available with the selected tape. Add unused media or click cancel to end operation. Note: It may take up to 60 seconds to recognise new media."
refer to the fact that your backup software (NTBACKUP?) is not detecting EMPTY media, but some media with data written on it.
I use another b/u software to erase the media then use within NTBACKUP (because the customer insists on a NTBACKUP test).
Just a thought.

Re: HP DAT72 internal tape drive: Media cannot be detected..

Hi Barry,

Hmm... didn't realise that also... but the media is a new media... haven't been open before... does it mean on HP tape media there's actually some data on it??

Re: HP DAT72 internal tape drive: Media cannot be detected..

Hi Leonard,

Didn't realise it was a new tape sorry.

You could look into the Removable storage service - (Rt click My Computer.. Manage .. Services & Applications .. Services .. Removable Storage) I need mine set to 'Automatic' and 'Started'

Also try inserting the media after NTBACKUP has started that way it has a chance via the removable storage service of recognising that a tape has been inserted.

Just some thoughts which may help.
Cheers,
Barry.
