HP SureStore Dat 40
Model C5686A
Hi
I am having some problems with the above unit, it has been in one of my Servers for a month or more and has worked without any problems, and then all of a sudden it decided to go on strike. It would not release the tape unless I powered down the Server, Rebooted and then (strangely) attempted to Inject Media - This would then spit the tape out. Loading another tape would cause the device to fail again and I would have to start the whole process again. I have since fitted an identical unit that works fine, so this rules out the Server been at fault..
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Re: HP SureStore Dat 40
Hi
The tape drive can receive scsi commands, one of these command is "reserve", when this command is received by the drive, it will be put in a condition where he will refuse any command from other applications and from the front panel.
usualy you can bypass this command pressing the eject button for more than 5 second.
The source of your problem (assuming you are in a windows environment) may be due to RSM, or some services from previous backup application that are "reserving" the tape, and then, you cannot use another application to access it.
Another cause may be due to scsi communication problem, and you can identify this in the servere event log
