Is ADAPTEC 29160 suitable for external LVD SCSI devices?
Hello.
I want to connect an HP DAT24e to my x4000 workstation.
x4000's got a 68-pin connector for external LVD SCSI devices.
Has anybody tested an ADAPTEC 29160 to connect an HP DAT24e?
Thank you.
P.S. This thread has been moved from General to Tape Libraries and Drives. - Hp Forum Moderator

Re: Is ADAPTEC 29160 suitable for external LVD SCSI devices?
The DAT24e is narrow (50 pin) SE SCSI. You can put a single ended (SE) device on an LVDS bus, as long as you have an SE (or autosensing) terminator. In your case you will also need a cable adapter to convert from wide to narrow. If there are other devices on the bus, you will also need a high-byte terminator.
Putting a single-ended device on an LVDS bus makes the whole bus operate in SE mode.

The 29160 has a 68 pin LVD external connection. The 29160N has a narrow 50 pin external ultra scsi connection. With the right cable/terminator you should be able to make either of these work.
The 29160N still has a high density connector, so you you will need a high to low density cable either way (I'm fairly sure that the DAT24e has a LD conector).
You can use the adaptec cable selector tool, as an example of the cable type you will need:

Note: The DAT24e installation manual recommends a SE host adapter.
