Issue with formatting new LTO-8 tapes on HPE 30750

Hello I am fairly new to working with Tape Drives, but in one of my machines I have been attempting to format some brand new LTO-8 tapes and I get an error. I have tried 2 brand new tapes and a tape that already had data on it to no avail.

The initial error is right after "Partitioning the medium"

"Format operation failed (-1)"

Then does a diagnostic dump 

"Cannot format medium: backend call failed (-1)"

"Cannot format: failed to partition the medium(-1)"

Hello...

you need to be little more specific here please.

Are you trying to use LTFS, which means drag and drop operation?

If not then please use HPE LTT, install it on the host, detect the drive and use the utlity function to format the cartridge. If the drive is still under warranty, please log a support case with us and we can assist further.

I installed and ran health checks using HPE LTT.

 

Product ID : HPE Ultrium 8-SCSI

Format : LTO-8 (w/r), LTO-7 Type M (w/r), LTO-7 (w/r)

Attempting to use the Erase drive within HPE LTT comes back with this error.

Test 'Tape Erase' started on device 'HPE Ultrium 8-SCSI' at address '2/0.0.0'
This utility will overwrite all the data on this tape. Would you like to continue?
This utility will only erase the tape directory. Do you wish to continue?
Please load the tape that you wish to erase. Continue?

Thanks. Can we get a support ticket from the drive/library through LTT.

You can get this from the LTT support button. If the support button is not enabled then select the drive/library and generate the support ticket then. from what it looks... it is a drive issue.

Yes I have generated the .lzt support ticket file. Is there a place to attach it/upload?

Thank you for the support ticket.

I see Tape Alert 31 in the logs:

|__ Tape Alert
||__ Tape Alert: 31: Hardware B [C]

This means that the drive will need to be replaced. Yould power cycle the drive, Update the firmware and see if it works, but most likely the drive will need to be replaced.

FW is available at the following support link:

The firmware to download is: LTT_Ultrium_8-SCSI_HH_SAS_P381_STANDALONE.frm (7.1 MB)

Please use HPE LTT to update the firmware.

I have updated the firmware and still a no go. During the upgrade of the firmware it stated at the end it wasnt sure it completed properly and to verify the firmware version number. It did indeed upgrade but still does not function. This device should be under warranty however when i put the serial into the HPE warranty checker i get back an error saying it doesnt exist.  Any assistance on that?

It would be best if you log a case by calling us. Sometimes the warranty checker is incorrect. Looks like the drive is bad if it doesn't load the firmware
