LTO drive for MSL warranty
Hi, i have a question about the warranty term of LTO drive installed in MSL unit.
I have read online that the LTO drive warranty is based on the MSL warranty:
" The HPE MSL2024 LTO Ultrium tape library itself has a 1 year Basic Next Business Day (NBD) warranty which covers any HPE MSL LTO Ultrium tape drives installed into this library from the date of purchase. This warranty can be extended up to 3 years, or 5 years when purchased new, and covers all tape drives installed. This includes any MSL LTO tape drives still operational you have from previous HPE tape libraries."
I have MSL 1/8 G2, not MSL2024, with LTO-8 sas drive with warranty expired six mounth ago.
The MSL or Drive have some issue and i would buy a new one and insert the 'old' LTO-8 drive.
Will the LTO-8 drive inherit the warranty of the new MSL?
So if the LTO drive will broke is covered by HPE?

Re: LTO drive for MSL warranty
Hello @Warning78,
This is little tricky situation. But it works like this:
1. This statement is true 'Drive warranty follows MSL system warranty'. But the warranty holds good with the components purchased along with the MSL system. In this case if the drive was purchased along with the system, the drive will inherit the MSL system warranty.
2. If the drive was not purchased with the MSL system, the drive you are going to install in the system will not inherit the system warrenty.
3. If the drive was replaced after purchasing the system with an old drive - in this case also the drive will not inherit the system warranty.
In the scenarios 2 and 3 above, if the drive had a separate warranty, that warranty will hold good, but seperate from the MSL system warranty.

Srinivas Bhat

Re: LTO drive for MSL warranty
To add to the earlier explanation.
The MSL contract data will cover the parts attached to the main unit. But any device added to the library post the contract will not be a part of the coverage.
Hope this answers the query.

Rif.: Query: LTO drive for MSL warranty
Thanks for the reply, excuse for my delay.
This is an extract of actual HPE Quickspecs:
"
Service and Support
Page 8
Warranty
1/8 Autoloader: Hewlett Packard Enterprise provides a 1-year, next business day onsite, part exchange, limited warranty for the
1/8 Autoloader and its components including drives, plus 9x5 phone support for the duration of the warranty.
MSL2024: Hewlett Packard Enterprise provides a 1-year, next business day onsite, part exchange, limited warranty for the
MSL2024 Tape Library and its components including drives, plus 9x5 phone support for the duration of the warranty.
Notes: The HPE MSL Tape Libraries warranty includes support for Customer Self Repair (CSR). The tape library cartridges,
terminators, external cables, drives, magazines, controller board and power supplies are mandatory customer self-repair parts.
This means both the removal and replacement of the above parts are designed for easy replacement; the on-site warranty does
not extend to these parts. However, customers may request HPE Services to replace these replaceable units (Rus) for an
additional charge. Also, customers who purchase an HPE Support Agreement have the option to perform CSR or receive onsite
support."
So, they not write in any part that the drives, cable, cartridges must be sold whit the drive.....
Is obvius tha the components like power supllies, controller, magazine will come whit the msl, BUT, drives and cartridges no.
And is obvius tha if i buy in the same time msl and drives all are cover by the respective warranty.
And more if i buy a carepack of 3 or 5 year, this will be register whit only the msl serial (but the drives are covered, care pack for internal drives does not exist), and more when i open a support case i need to open it whit msl serial not whit drive serial.....
Definetly it's not clear....
