I am in process of configuring MSL5062S2 SDLT library with rp8400 via FC Switch. It is connected via Fiber channel.
It is not being recognized in ioscan output.
Details of OS
HPUX 11i with March'2003 patch bundle.
Do I need to install Data Protector s/w to get it recognize by the system or make it work?
Many thanks in advance...

Re: MSL5062S2 configuration in HPUX 11i via FC
check first if the stape driver (tape) and schgr driver (robotic control) are loaded in the kernel (requires a kernel rebuild and hence reboot if not the case).
What is the output of:
ioscan -fnC autoch
ioscan -fnC tape
You do not need Data Protector software to use the robot. With the command 'mc', you can load tapes and so as well. See the man pages for more details.

Re: MSL5062S2 configuration in HPUX 11i via FC
did you ever reboot the rp8400 after plugging in the MSL ?
I had to do that once I replaced a FC controller in an MSL 5030 and I could not rescan it witout rebooting the HP-UX box tied to it.
You should only see the CLAIMED status for the FC adapter and NO_HW for the target, right ?

Re: MSL5062S2 configuration in HPUX 11i via FC
Do you have the e1200 Storage Router installed in the MSL5026 library ? If so,
change the default map from Indexed to Auto Assigned.

Re: MSL5062S2 configuration in HPUX 11i via FC
ioscan -fn output does not show autoch stape is in kernel as we can make use of DDS4 tape.
All FC adapters are claimed. When I connect MSL5062 Library via LVD, it works but not with FC.
I have removed LVD connection to host and connected via FC Switch, it does not recognize.
DO I need to make any change in FC Switch?
Pls. advise.

Re: MSL5062S2 configuration in HPUX 11i via FC
What is the output of 'ioscan -fnC tape'? Not even mentioned? Is there zoning on the FC switch?

Re: MSL5062S2 configuration in HPUX 11i via FC
I believe we have a similar environment, two rp8400 connected through an 8b switch to an MSL 5030.
We configure the FC controller on the MSL like the following:
System Menu > Actiev Fabric:
Server Free Backup Mode set to DISABLED
Number of Controller LUNS set to 0
Submit and reboot
Main > Ports > FC Port
Port Mode set to N_Port (for Fibre switches)
Use Hard AL_PA set to Disabled
Discovery Mode set to Autodiscovery on Reboot
Buffered Tape Writes set to Disabled
Buff. Tape Queue Length set to 1
Default Map set to Auto Assigned
Performace Mode depends on you FC Switch capability and your FC adapter on the host, I presume 2 Gb)
Force FCP Response Code set to Disabled
Submit
Main > Ports > SCSI Bus
Primary Initiator ID set to 7
Discovery set to Enabled
Bus Reset on Boot set to Enabled
Discovery Delay (seconds) seto to 30
Submit
Do a maunal discovery from Main Menu and you should see all your drives
Reboot MSL, and reboot your hosts.
It should work provided that as Kurt suggested you have both stape and schgr enabled in your kernel (tgt I assume is ok).
Cheers,
Mike

Re: MSL5062S2 configuration in HPUX 11i via FC
I have enabled schgr driver in the kernel that is why drives is being recognize when I connect via LVD SCSI Cable to host.
I need to connect this drive via FC switch (with no LVD SCSI connection with HOST). I will work on solution sugegsted by Mike.
By the way, what is the difference between Longwave SFP and shortwave SFP? Do need to connect Library with longwave SFP (as suggested by Pre-sale)?. Both GBIC looks like same.
I do appreciate. if some has configured new compaq library via FC Switch to HPUX 11i, can SHARE his experience......
Thanks & regards

Re: MSL5062S2 configuration in HPUX 11i via FC
as far as I understand the SW SFP are meant to handle distances up to 500m, while the LW SFP up to 10 km, externally you shouldn't see the difference, they're not even produced by HP directly but (for the SW at least) by Finistar.
SW ones are 850 nm (FTRJ-8519), for the LW you should have 1310 nm (FTRJ 1319).
I'm using SW (everything is within a few feet and we're usinh max 16mt FC cables).

Re: MSL5062S2 configuration in HPUX 11i via FC
Thanks for clear explanation of SFP. The procedure, you have mentioned in earlier reply is to configure Switch Port connected to MSL.
Can you please confirm..
How can we see FC card configuration in MSL. Where can I define IP Address for FC card installed in MSL. I even can not see it via RMC.
Pls. advise.
Thanks & regards

Re: MSL5062S2 configuration in HPUX 11i via FC
did you check if switch has some zoning configuration enabled which does not allow host to see library? Useful outputs are
configshow
supportshow
I suspect even if router is configured incorrectly server should see something (at least this router) through FC

Solutionif you want to use FC to connec an MSL you're supposed to have an E1200 storage router FC controller card seated on the back of your MSL library.
This board comes equipped with a FC port, two LVD SCSI adapters a 10BaseT LAN card and a serial connection.
As a standard the IP is set to 1.1.1.1 (255.255.255.0) so that if you want to use the WEB page to configure it, simply configure your PC as 1.1.1.2 255.255.255.0 and tie it to the E1200 router through a crossover LAN cable.
Point your browser to http://1.1.1.1 and you'll be inside the configuration.
root:password is the default setting to log in.
Following the steps I mentioned before and eventually rebooting your CPUs, you should be able to see your drives.
Please take care of what Eugeny mentioned about the FC switch, since if zoning is in place but misconfigred you would probaby face some weirdness.
I hope it helps !
Cheers,
Mike

Re: MSL5062S2 configuration in HPUX 11i via FC
It is recommended to use the "sctl" driver not "schgr" (schgr is for MO-jukeboxes). After installing the driver your library is listed with ioscan as:
unknown -1 0/2/0/0.1.0.255.0.0.0 UNCLAIMED UNKNOWN COMPAQ MSL5000 Series
This is all normal.
By default the e1200 Storage Router is configured to use "Indexed Maps" but, as there is no such map created by default, no drives is listed.. After setting the Router IP adress, log in to the Router, click on the FC port on the Router Image and change the Default map to Auto Assigned. After that the drives is acessible.

Re: MSL5062S2 configuration in HPUX 11i via FC
It is working now, The only problem I faced while using IE, it was just hanging that could be missing java plug in..
Then using telnet, I was able to configure and get it recognize.
I am attaching procedure in word format which Mike has suggested me for other people benefits.
Thanks once again all..
