New LTO3 Tapes bad quality - what to do?

I bought 5 new HP LTO3 tapes (C7973A), but disapointed with the quality.

The backupjob normal has a compression factor of 1,1 to 1,2, and so the 370 GB of the backupjob occupy ~310 GB on the tape.

But on the new tapes the backup didnt finish, because only 210 GB of data filled the tape with 390 GB of Data.
Another Tape of the 5 was better and the Backup stored 266 GB and than the 390 GB where used up.

I tested with LTT and the tapes failed:

I used a cleaning cartridge, but no change.

So i sit on 10 tapes with poor quality, which have only the half capacity of an LTO3 tape.
What else can i do?

Re: New LTO3 Tapes bad quality - what to do?

Hello AKB...

I am guessing that the drive itself may be bad. Did you run a drive assessment test from the latest version of Library and Tape Tools? If not please run and if the test fails then the drive will need to be replaced. It is unlikely that the entire batch of tapes can go bad.

Re: New LTO3 Tapes bad quality - what to do?

The Drive is ok, as long as i use an old tape.

I have updated LTT from 4.29 to 4.30.

Made 2 drive assessment tests.

First with an other old tape, outcome: The test has PASSED and the drive is GOOD.

So i dont think that the drive is bad, its the tapes.

I have over 40 HP tapes that work good with this drive, and 10 new HP tapes, that have only half the capacity.

So it seems that tapes with a serial higher as 2xxxxxxxxx are bad.
The old tapes all have serial numbers like 1xxxxxxxxx or lower.

The serials of the bad tapes are:

Batch of 5 total bad tapes: 2180519135, 2210298150, 2090687898, 2100826389, 2140711788
Batch of 5 bad tapes: 2190491212, 2180482097, 2120514866, 2110510753, 2100575558

Re: New LTO3 Tapes bad quality - what to do?

It sounds like you are doing the right things running the drive assessment test and the media assessment test.  The results of the drive assessment test with your old media look good.

Have you tried running one of the new tapes a few times to see if there are any changes?  If somehow there was a contaminate such as a fine dust then the behavior will change when used multiple times.

I'll check with some of our tape experts inside HPE.

Re: New LTO3 Tapes bad quality - what to do?

I have used some of the new Tapes twice.
I will try the LTT Media Test with the 4x option, and repeat the test, as it only runs ca. 20 min. And look if its getting better.
A Backup runs over 5h for 200 GB on the bad tapes, as the speed is reduced. So its not so easy to repeat this often.

The first batch had each tape wraped with plastic, the second batch (the not so bad) had a seal, which sticks on one side only.

Test some Days ago: Fair margin, all other Warning

Re: New LTO3 Tapes bad quality - what to do?

The backup was faster as last time (from 1.228 MB/min to 1.499 MB/min)
But the problem with capacity still exists:
Written on tape: 262,3 GB
Used on tape: 332,9 GB

Today I make a backup to an old tape, tomorrow I can format the new tape with LTT and test it again.

I did not find a Format in LTT, did you mean the "Tape Erase" Utility?
There are 3 options: Qick, Full and Secure

Re: New LTO3 Tapes bad quality - what to do?

I'm still asking around to see if some of the tape experts can comment.  There is some supposition that the drive head may be worn a bit and the old tapes match the wear on the head so they perform well but the new tapes don't quite align and aren't performing well.  If that is the case continued use should see improvements and some of the results you have posted seem to show improvement in performance, especially right at the start of the tape which is the space that will have been used the most.

Were these tapes purchased from reputable vendors?  There have been a few instances of counterfeit tapes being sold as new but I don't get the impression that is the case here.

You can pull a full drive log following a successful test with an old tape and another log following a successful test of a new tape and post the text decodes of those logs here and we may be able to figure out more.

Re: New LTO3 Tapes bad quality - what to do?

The first 5 tapes were purchased from the dealer from whom we have purchased all tapes so far. The packaging and tapes look the same as always, with white labels.
The other 5 (the slightly better ones) we bought from a different dealer, here it was a slightly different product, tapes with a barcode label, the tapes were in an already opened box. The single tapes were not wrapped in plastic, but only provided with a HP Secutiy Seal, which only stuck properly on one side and the tape could be taken out of the box without destroying the seal.

I will do the tests and post the logs here.

Re: New LTO3 Tapes bad quality - what to do?

I was able to talk to one of the media experts that could decode serial numbers and understood packaging.  That media expert said that the tapes probably are genuine HP or HPE media.  He tells me that the two forms of packaging you describe are both correct for genuine HP or HPE tapes.  The security sticker is usually used for pre-labeled tapes and shrink wrap for unlabled tapes.

Based off of the serial numbers for the tapes these likely are HP branded tapes (rather than HPE branded) that have been on the shelf for a while and one of the security stickers may have just come loose.  That seems consistent with your comment that the security sticker was an "HP" security sticker.

I also talked with a tape head expert who said that there is a realistic scenario where a worn tape drive head would result in the capacity loss and rewrite numbers that are shown in your media assessment tests while the drive would still work well with the older media.  Without full logs though it isn't possible to say if that is what you are seeing.  If it is the worn head condition that he is thinking of then the performance may improve as the new tapes are used and there can be slight differences in tape media where several new tapes that are all within manfucturing specifications perform differently due to very subtle differences in the head/media alignment and how that matches the head wear.

I hate to say it but it sounds like the most likely problem is a worn head that aligns well with your older media but is not aligning well with the new media.

So, you're right, the tapes have been gathering dust on a shelf.

Below is the link to the Support Text, it was to big for here, and even to big for pastebin so i deleted some duplicate lines with only zeros.
