Speed problems testing Ultrium.....

After tested a hp Storageworks Ultrium tape drive model 460 with HP LTT I getted the following warnings:
"

The current SCSI configuration is likely to be limiting the performance of the drive.
Please check that your HBA is the correct type for the drive and that the cabling is good.

The SCSI configuration referenced is the one for which device analysis was run and/or the support ticket was pulled.
If this is not via your backup server then you may not have an issue.
Current SCSI configuration: single-ended Recommended: LVD
Current SCSI configuration: narrow Recommended: wide
Current SCSI synchronization period: 50 nsec. Recommended: 25 nsec.
Current SCSI transfer rate limited to: 20 MB/sec. Recommended: 80 MB/sec. or better
"

I'me really a newbie in this world of backups , SCSI devices, etc. What I've to do to correct this issues?

Re: Speed problems testing Ultrium.....

If I unnderstand well the message, you are using a se narrow communication, reducing the bandwith on the scsi bus.
this may be due to the hba model, hba settings, or problem with the cable or terminator.
This can also be due to a device connected to the same scsi bus like dat24 that will set down your scsi bus
what is your HBA? eventualy you can enter in the bios and set the correct communication speed (80 Mb/s or 160 Mn/s0 and the bus from narrow to wide.
it this do not solve, you may have a deffective scsi cable or terminator

Re: Speed problems testing Ultrium.....

Ok that is clear now, this HBA is limiting the bandwith, the specifications say max transfer rate 20 MB/s, so no way go get more

also this is not a supported and is not recommanded for LTO2 drives.

You should go for a 160 or 320 HBA minimum, or you will have always the same messages even if the Drive itself will work, but with limited speed

Re: Speed problems testing Ultrium.....

I do not know if you have an internal or external device, but you need a 68 pin connector to use wide bus, and the hba you selected have a 50 pin external connector, that would revert in a narrow bus (8bits)

I would recommand at least a 20160

Re: Speed problems testing Ultrium.....

Vasco,

If you use the www.hp.com/go/connect web page, you can look up product and HBA compatibility based on your server platform (e.g. HP, Dell, etc).

There is also a list of HBAs that are recommended for servers not listed:

http://www.hp.com/products1/storage/compatibility/tapebackup/ThirdParty/index.html#HBA

The list should be similar to the document Marino referenced.
The journey IS the reward.
