ULTRIUM 215 EXTERNAL DRIVE/GOING OFFLINE

Any Idea why would ULTRIUM 215 EXTERNAL DRIVE keep going off line/ New drive over a month old
Was on a different controller, and was going off line most of the time, now on 29160, it work for some time then it will go off line.

Server: Gateway desktop 2.4 gig
Processor/1GB ram

Operating System: Windows XP Home
Backup Software: Veritas Backup Exec
Tape Drive: Ultrium 215 - External
HBA Card: Adaptec 29160

When drive on line, it would pass all L&TT test/ firmware up to date.
Ideas appreciated

Re: ULTRIUM 215 EXTERNAL DRIVE/GOING OFFLINE

1) Review the Windows system event logs, and see what messages are logged at the time of error.

2) Collect an LTT support ticket, and review the fault logs. Note for a Ultrium1 drive, the fault logs are in the mechanical EEPROM under the hex dumps section.

Re: ULTRIUM 215 EXTERNAL DRIVE/GOING OFFLINE

OS: Windows XP Home! Don't see that one very often with Ultrium drives and likely not tested much so while it should work there is a possiblity something about XP Home doesn't like the drive.

If you have an Adaptec error in the Event Log (aicxxxx driver) you can post the hex data that is the additional information and it can be decoded to see if there is any additional information that might help.

I don't see any tickets from Munir today, or anything with information mentioning this post.

Re: ULTRIUM 215 EXTERNAL DRIVE/GOING OFFLINE

Hi David
Can you look it up by a case that end in 1600?
I think was sent out on January 30

Thank you

Re: ULTRIUM 215 EXTERNAL DRIVE/GOING OFFLINE

No ticket with "1600" in subject, but there's one for a 215 drive on the 30th, so I assume that's what you are referring to (Controller Serial # HU83H01933)

The only thing in the drive fault log were a few benign DSP servo faults (recoverable). No host reported errors.

Find out what events are in the system event log and the backup (Veritas) logs.
