Ultrium 230 won't complete LT&T
C7401A, WinXP Pro, Adaptec 29160N & 2940U2W
The drive won't complete LT&T v4.0's "LTO Drive Assessment Test" (stops at block 56000 of 70000) or "Read/Write Test" (halts during rewinding). In both instances, LT&T displays "Waiting for Pending I/O Request to complete... Pending command: 0A (Write)"
There are no errors indicated on the front panel LED's. I've tried two different scsi adapters & 3 different tapes. Termination is correct. I've cleaned the drive. There are no other devices connected to the scsi controller. I've disabled RSM. I've checked the scsi controller's config and verified that the 230's ID is configured for maximum speed.
The tapes I'm using are IBM Ultrium 1 tapes (08L9120).
I have found a scsi adapter error in the event viewer: "The device, \Device\Scsi\aic78u21, did not respond within the timeout period." This error occurs with both adapters.
Suggestions?

Re: Ultrium 230 won't complete LT&T
Odd that it seems to get stuck at different functional points in the test (writing in the assessment test versus rewinding in the read/write test) though the timeout symptom is the same.
My guess would normally be driver version or some cabling issue. Have you checked that you've got the latest adapter drivers? You could also try re-seating the cables just in case and check there aren't any bent pins.
Another test to try is the Device Performance test. This uses the tape driver rather than the NT miniport so may behave differently. It's a pretty good test for verifying the whole data path from the server to the drive as the backup app would see it.
Failing that you could send the LTT debug info to the LTT support team and we can take a look see if there's any thing we can tell.
Please:
* In the LTT preferences, set the IO history on
* After the failure, find the Eventlog.ltt file in the logs directory where you installed LTT and mail it with as much detail as you can to LTT_team@hp.com.
* Let us know the system model type
* If you could pull a support ticket after the failure we may be able to see what the drive thinks is going on. Please also send that to LTT_team@hp.com. Please use 'save as' in the support pane and you'll find the two most recent files (***_header.ltt and ***_Ultrium 2***.dat) make up the ticket.
Was there a reason you were running LTT? Did you have another issue that triggered this?

It's more interesting when it's gone wrong

Re: Ultrium 230 won't complete LT&T
We experienced many problems with LT&T v4.0 as well. This release seems a buggy version. We roll back to LT&T v3.5 SP2 and most of our problems solved. Sometimes latest may not be the greatest.
