StoreOnce 3640 Catalyst store with Commvault Metallic
Just a question here about backing up to Catalyst storage using Commvault Metallic. To make sure my thinking was correct I believe the StoreOnce device does its own encryption on the data stored on the device? So when we backup data to the storeonce from Metallic that data (backups) are encrypted? or is backup data not encrypted but immutable? Looking to clarify this.
Thank you

Re: StoreOnce 3640 Catalyst store with Commvault Metallic
Hello @jfer2022,
Data immutability and encryptions are optional features you can enable for StoreOnce catalyst stores. You can enable either of them or both, no matter which backup application you are using.
If you want your data not encrypted, but immutable - yes, that is possible.

Re: StoreOnce 3640 Catalyst store with Commvault Metallic
Hello and thank you for the reply. Lets remove Metallic from the scenario here and say if we have vm backups running in HPE Simplivity and using HP StoreOnce Catalyst stores then these are either Encrypted/Immutable or both? Is this the view of Details on the said catalyst store for this information?

Re: StoreOnce 3640 Catalyst store with Commvault Metallic
Also, an additional question for the settings of a Catalyst Store. I see the Security Settings and the
Immutability Retention period X days
Also Client Password Policy Sha-1 or 256.
Can either of these be changed on the fly? I am guessing you would want a higher Immutability retention period and also 256 from Sha-1. Can I change these or will that mess anything up with existing backups etc?
Thank you!

Re: StoreOnce 3640 Catalyst store with Commvault Metallic
Hello @jfer2022,
Immutable backups keep backed-up data out of reach, effectively erecting a wall against ransomware attacks. HPE StoreOnce Catalyst ensure that you can configure backup data immutability backups so that they can’t be encrypted, modified, or deleted during the configured retention period.
Here are some reference links which can help you on HPE Catalyst Store with Data Immutability feature.
Also, answering to your additional question:
You can change the Immutability Retention period
Note that if you enable immutability and Backup application does not start a new backup chain and still continues the chain, the whole backup chain is marked as immutable. So, after you configure immutability, the current or new backup chain will be made immutable. All other existing backup chains won’t be touched and therefore stay mutable.
