SV3200 - No more free space - EID_UTILIZATION_STATUS_EXCESSIVE_L2
Hi everybody,
I bought 4 years ago a SV3200 and I configured the SAN as following :
- 6 disk of 838Go - raw capacity ~4,9 To
- 2 raid 5 (2 x 3 HDD) - capacity ~1,6 To each
- During the creation of the Volume :
* Allocation : thinly provisionned
* Data level protection : Network RAID-10
At the end of the configuration wizard, it showed me a résumé saying that I had 3,2 To of available space.
After connecting my hosts servers* to the SAN with a LUN and an iSCI connection, Windows showed me the exact same thing : a drive with 3,2 To of capacity.
*I have 2 Windows server running HyperV in a HA cluster.
So, I created all my VM, and everything went fine until few weeks ago, when an alarm was triggered by the SV3200 about the free space remaining.
I didn't pay attention to this, because for me I barely used half of the available space.
But few days ago, all my VM crashed.
I checked the drive in Windows, it wasn't there (it was the reason for the VM crash - drive not present or connected)
I switched the HyperV role to the other node, the drive showed up and I could restart the VM, but after some time (~30 min - 1 hour), the HyperV role stopped again due to the lack of the drive. I switched back to the previous node, the drive showed up and I could start the VM again.
Since, all my VM keep crashing every 1 hour.
Between 2 crash, I did some researchs and I found that this problem appeared when I was using almost 1,5-1,6 To of space.
I looked into my array configuration, and I saw that the limit above is the same as my RAID 5 array (1,6 To).
On this forum, I read here and here that when you create a LUN with a Network Raid-10, only half of the space is really available. I think so that's why I got the alarm and this big problem (1,6 is the half of 3,2).
I reduced the size of some virtual hard drive and I managed to only use ~800Go of space instead of 1,6To, but I still have the alarm and my VM still crash time to time, because the SAN is still full.
Here are my questions :
- Why it tells me (both Windows and the SAN) that I've 3,2 To of space while I can really use the half ?
- How can I make some free space on the SAN knowing Snapshots are not activated/configured and I can't reduce more the size of my VMs ?
- How can I really get 3,2 To of available space ?
Thank you for your answers !

Hi
I would kindly request you to contact the HPE Technical Support.
Log a ticket, get to know the exact break up of allocated space and to get the issue fixed.
