If you want to run RIP or OSPF between the host and the router you can get the same effect.

Sorry, but meshing is not the solution here. Meshing is strictly layer2 technology.
The latest firmware includes XRRP, which is similar in functionality to the standard VRRP. It's not compatible, though, so you do need another 53XX for failover.
