PCM policy manager

I am trying to set up the policy manager to send me an email alert whenever one of my switches has an error. There are several parameters in the email alerts, but some of them just don't seem to work. If you set the subject line to $ip or $dns,
the subject line from the error should include either the IP address or hostname of the switch. Doesn't seem to work.
Any ideas/insructions on how to configure this so I can better utilize the resource?
