Procurve 1800-24G redundant setup

Hi everyone,

I just purchased 6 * 1800-24G switches and want to set them up with 2 switches as an redudant core and 2 * 2 switches for servers.

I've got multiple cabling options, I've attached the design.

Any tips/remarques are welcome.

Anyway, when you say Redundant Core, what do you mean exactly by that ?

No routing, no Spanning Tree, you can get on these switches.

The only think you can use (if you don't want to use other extra device like a router or routing switch), the only thing that can help you is the Trunking.

Where you can trunk between the DUAL CORE and each of the Edge switches.

When you think about Vlans, then you need an external router or routing switch to do routing between the Vlans.

The questions seem simple to me.

Only need to know if

a)
I need to make three stacks ( 3 * 2 switches)
b)
If I need to connect them with a trunk
c)
How I connect them to the two central switches (also with a trunk or each one cable)

I can't think of a way to build a redundant network out of low end switches like the 1800 series. I suspect nobody else can either.

Check my attachment and you'll get the picture.

You don't need 'high end' switches for redundancy in my opinion.

SERVER A has 2 nics.

Nic 1 to switch A
Nic 2 to switch B

Switch A to switch C
Switch B to switch D

Switch A & B trunk between
Switch C & D trunk between

I just like to find the best possible solution for the wiring and trunking.

Come on guys, i've read dozens of complicated solutions here, I thought why not ask simple wiring questions...kudo's to grab here :-)

With these designs you're creating redundant loops. Spanning-tree would be a required feature of the switch for this to work. Unfortunately the 1800 series do not support this.

For your servers, you can use NIC teaming to multiple switches, but for the switches themselves you must be very careful not to create any loops within your design.

With design 1 it's indeed possible that i'm going to have a loop without the spanning tree.

But design 2 should work in my opinion, because i thought when ab cd ef would be stacks, it would act as one device be seen
as (ab)-(cd)-(ef)
Where (cd) would act as core, (ab) & (ef) as server switches.
Then connect the server to each server switch and combined with the teaming from the servers it would be redundant.

For one the 1800 doesnt support stacking.
Even if it would support it, it wouldnt work that way. Stacking only allows managing the stack members with one IP, it doesnt magically generate a 48 port switch if you stack together a pair of 24-port units. Trunks cant span multiple switches etc.
The 1800 is definitely the wrong choice if you want any form of redundancy besides trunking.

What about LACP, 1800 series does support it.

So It that way, when both lines are active I'd have a 2gb link and if a cable or switch goes down, i'd still have 1gb connection.

My hp representive in Belgium saids it's possible to do it with my 6 * 1800's.
(I hope it for him, else he's gonna ### :-) )

Hi

I think your best shot will be having multiple Trunks between your switches BUT
Without Making LOOPS.

You i think the best topology will be :

1- If you would like to make C & D Core Switches.

2- Connect Switch A with a 2G Trunk to C.
3- Connect Switch B with a 2G Trunk to C.
4- Connect Switch E with a 2G Trunk to D.
5- Connect Switch F with a 2G Trunk to D.
6- Create a Trunk between Both Core Switches.
7- Team NICs for Server1 then connect them to Switch A&B.
8- Team NICs for Server2 then connect them to Switch E&F.

I hope that makes sense :)
