Relentless automation: a must for 5G networks
An enlightening interview and recorded demo about transforming telcos to agile service providers with Zero Touch automation. The advent of cloudification/disaggregation principles and a number of IT technologies is dramatically changing telcos networks, but it also brings significant operational risks and challenges in terms of volume, dynamicity and complexity: telcos are heading toward managing hundreds of different types of VNF/CNFs and thousands of RAN sites, in addition to having to manage advanced services across the RAN and the core networks. To achieve this, telcos must establish an aggressive roadmap that leads to Zero-Touch automation.
If this problematic sounds familiar to you, keep reading!
About our author:
Olivier Daures has overseen strategic marketing at HPE for the Communications Technology Group (CTG) since 2016. He has over 30 years of experience in the telecommunications and IT industry. Olivier worked first for a System Integrator (SI) before joining a CSP as a senior manager, in charge of developing a new generation of OSS/BSS solutions. He joined the former Compaq in 2000 as a product manager for the IP network management. Since 2000, Olivier has held senior product management positions within HPE in the IT Service Management (ITSM), Business Service Management (BSM) and telecommunications business units. Olivier holds a Master's Degree in mathematics and computer science, with a major in artificial intelligence.
Wi-Fi, 5G and RAN: driving new levels of complexity
Rolf Eberhardt, Head of Orchestration for HPE Communications Technology Group, presented a session at HPE Discover 2022 to share his insight on this key topic. View this short interview where Rolf presents a precise assessment of the challenges that the telecommunications industry is facing, details how automation helps telcos address them, and introduces real examples of advanced automation deployments today.
In this interview, Rolf stresses that โif you look at the new technologies โฆ Wi-Fi, 5G, RAN, these are technologies that are incredibly complex, bringing in several layers of virtualization, abstraction and distributionโ. He continues, saying that โyou have to be aware that if you want to get this to work, you, at the same time, have to live with a legacy environment, all business processes, and on top of it, lack of peopleโ. He concludes with the thought that โtelcos have to learn to automate more if they want to surviveโ. Rolf then articulates how advanced automation can be successfully implemented now, using two examples โ Vodafone Idea and Swisscom โ to illustrate his point.
The case for Zero Touch automation
HPE Discover 2022 has also been a key opportunity for HPE teams to showcase real and critical automation use cases for the telco industry. Iโd like to share the recording of one of them, Transforming telcos to agile service providers with zero-touch automation, presented by Ignacio Aldama, Orchestration evangelist and NFV/SDN expert, HPE Communications Technology Group.
In this video, Ignacio presents two Zero Touch automation use cases. The first one is about automatically determining application SLAs and maintaining them during usage peaks. This is made possible by fully automated detection and remediation in a containerized infrastructure. The second is a more complex Zero Touch automation scenario: disaster recovery. In this example, Ignacio explains, step by step, how workloads on a down site are automatically restored on a backup site.
If you are interested in Zero-Touch automation, I encourage you to take time to watch these two enlightening videos.
