If you are like most businesses, you likely have a backlog of cool, transformative IT projects just waiting for funding. How about making the business case to link your energy cost savings to fund backlogged IT projects? This would be a win for the business and the IT department!

IDC explains that the benefits of sustainable IT are substantial and well worth striving to achieve.* For example, 41% of companies say that improved profitability is one of the benefits they are looking to achieve from a more sustainable IT strategy – see the figure below.

For many organizations, the energy overheads of operating inefficient data centers and older infrastructure are a burden that increases the operating cost of IT. While the majority of businesses are building sustainable IT projects and setting goals, there are challenges that must be overcome.

Thankfully, HPE has tools and services that address many of the roadblocks to sustainable IT. Let’s start with the basics: You need to be able to see what is happening before you can optimize. The HPE Sustainability Insight Center provides a current view of the total energy consumption for HPE Compute devices, including information about greenhouse gas (GHG) Scope 1 Emissions, and costs associated with your energy consumption.

The services provided by the tool include:

  •      Measures the carbon footprint of HPE IT assets based on actual energy usage
  •      Analyzes telemetry aggregated across sites and provides cumulative totals and averages
  •      Reports carbon footprint and energy costs across sites (per device and site location)
  •      Reports energy consumption data from devices.

HPE Sustainability Insight Center is available free for all customers who manage their HPE Compute devices with HPE GreenLake for Compute Ops Management (COM) and HPE GreenLake for Compute Ops Management – One View Edition (COM-OVE) within the HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform.

With the ability to aggregate data from Compute Ops Management and Compute Ops Management for OneView Edition, customers will be able to opt in and share data with the HPE Sustainability Insight Center. By opting in to metrics data collection, you will be able to run a sustainability report for specific dates within the last six months. Data collections from HPE compute assets are automated for servers managed by COM and COM-OVE. Data residency is supported across multiple regions for telemetry data that is collected through the HPE GreenLake platform data backbone. Region support includes EU Central, AP Northeast, and the US West.

Capabilities include:

  • Calculation of carbon emissions and energy costs based on actual power data
  • Visualize and report on carbon footprint for managed HPE servers
  • Filter based on equipment type, location, and date range to perform what-if analysis.

HPE Sustainability Insight Center helps customers measure their power consumption and carbon footprint, providing them with the ability to demonstrate reduced emissions and power usage over time. This is achieved through:

  •    Assisting customers to take informed action to reduce their climate impact and optimize their server utilization.
  •   Determining when, where, and how they can best operate their IT assets to meet sustainability goals.
  •   Helping customers achieve regulatory and business requirements focused on sustainable IT.
  •    Lower energy consumption and lower TCO.

No matter where you are on your sustainable IT journey, HPE has expertise, services, and tools to come along beside you to help you plan and work to achieve your goals. Our tools and services encompass the IT lifecycle, which enables us to meet you where you are on your journey. From getting started and developing your sustainable IT goals and strategy, to leveraging financial and infrastructure tools, to managing ongoing IT operations, we will work with you to help you achieve your sustainable IT goals.
