Get your data-first modernization off to the best start: 4 key agendas

Exploring these business-driven dimensions can help you understand the “whys” of your initiative and measure its success.

Yet spending some time to define your goals and expectations is a wise move; it can help you build your value proposition and pin down your KPIs.

In a recent article at CIO.com, I looked at four key business-driven agendas that shape the “why” of data-first transformation: Every data-first modernization strategy should start with “why”? These are part of the HPE Digital Journey Map, a model that HPE’s Digital Transformation Advisory practice uses to help businesses scope and plan their digital journey:

The Experience Agenda. Businesses’ attention to the customer experience has only been heightened by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for more resilient, as well as more engaging, services. This agenda can define KPIs such as customer loyalty, recurring purchases and digital revenue streams.

The Digitization Agenda. New value is constantly being generated where the physical world touches digital technologies, for example in the Internet of Things, via edge computing, and in the digital workplace. In manufacturing, for example, this agenda might spotlight measures such as overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).

The Platforms Agenda. Platforms, typically cloud-enabled architectures, can provide a set of foundational capabilities for the business. Or they can enable a “platform business model” – essentially becoming the basis of the business itself.

The Engineering Agenda. The key goals here center around accelerating time to value and reducing friction in the innovation cycle. Agile approaches, DevOps, and cloud native practices continue to play an important role, but increasing engineering teams’ access to data and insights will be vital for future digital outcomes.

I explore each of these agendas in depth in the article; you might also want to check out my earlier CIO article about creating space for moments of clarity: Activating Digital Transformation with an ‘aha!’ Moment.
