Google Anthos and HPE GreenLake: A powerful combination for hybrid cloud

If you’re looking for innovative ways to modernize your on-premises environments and accelerate your move to cloud-native, these three use cases should be on your radar.

HPE-GreenLake-HPE-Pointnext-Services-Google-Anthos-hybrid-cloud.pngHPE and Google have worked together for several years to help companies adopt cloud-native computing on hybrid cloud platforms. HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform offers a pay-as-you-go model for hardware, software and services that works together with Google Cloud Anthos to accelerate customers’ digital transformation and innovation by easing the adoption of cloud-native computing. (See: What is hybrid cloud?)

Over years of collaboration with clients, HPE Pointnext Services’ Advisory & Professional Services team has found many successful use cases where Google Cloud Anthos can be applied, in various industries. We’ve also uncovered the typical pitfalls of this journey. It’s clear to us that the right use cases of Google Cloud Anthos with HPE GreenLake platform can bring innovation and optimization to enterprise IT platforms, and at the same time opening new sources of value for IT services in enterprises. (See: What is HPE GreenLake?)

HPE was present at Google Cloud Day Japan, where I shared the secrets – learned through many engagements – of how to modernize on-premises environments with these use cases for Google Anthos:

  • Google Anthos with Apigee hybrid. Apigee, part of Google Cloud, is an integrated API platform that designs, protects, publishes, analyzes, and monitors the APIs that connect applications and software for hybrid multicloud runtime. You can extend the life of legacy applications, build modern services, and quickly deliver new experiences with Google’s API management platform as an abstraction layer on top of existing services. The Apigee runtime will run in the public cloud, including Google Cloud, or on-premises. Apigee's runtime is provided in containers, so Google Anthos is used as the platform to run it.
  • Google Anthos in visual inspection AI. As part of quality control in the manufacturing industry, a visual inspection solution can make good judgments based on images. You can collect image data to be inspected on Google Cloud, preprocess it for analysis, label defects, and enable model generation by supervised learning using the data. After the model is generated, it can be exported and deployed to perform visual inspection. The visual inspection model itself is provided in a container, making it easy to deploy cloud-generated models on-premises using Google Anthos. For greater accuracy, we feed back the latest data from the edge to the cloud to improve the model in a continuous cycle.
  • Google Anthos as a step to cloud-native in full cloud. In order to truly realize the cost benefits of using public cloud, it is necessary to reach full cloud-native. But this presents high technical hurdles and investments, which can make modernization difficult. A good choice is to use containers to bring cloud-native capabilities to on-premises, traditional applications. It’s a faster path to modernization than a full cloud-native initiative. Containers, a cloud-native element, are highly portable. With Google Anthos, you can easily move back and forth between on-premises and the public cloud and worry less about the boundaries between the two. As a result, you are containerizing development on-premises to accelerate your move to full cloud-native.

HPE GreenLake for Anthos – a cloud services approach

HPE GreenLake for Anthos provisions and integrates hardware, software, and services to create an on-premises Anthos solution that is consumed as a cloud-like service. The HPE GreenLake platform’s pay-per-use billing model means you consume the capacity you need – no more and no less. At the same time, HPE proactively monitors usage and provisions additional available capacity ahead of demand, which reduces the risk of investing too much or too little in your IT infrastructure. You get a scalable solution that simplifies your Anthos experience and makes it easier to understand current and future costs.
