HPE GreenLake enables showback for more cloud services

By Paul Zinn, Senior Product Marketing Manager, HPE GreenLake cloud

gl-showback-main.pngThe consumption analytics capability of HPE GreenLake now supports usage and cost reporting for more HPE GreenLake cloud services.

Consumption analytics has long been the place where customers and partners go to view their current cost for HPE GreenLake Flex Solutions, HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise, and their public cloud estates. Consumption analytics provides a unified view of hybrid cloud usage and cost with the ability to create multiple views of the data to meet different needs across your organization. It also gives you powerful tools to show how usage and cost align to your business, known as showback reporting.

Showback reporting helps enterprises monitor and control costs by attributing expenses to specific departments, teams, projects, or other business groupings. A showback report provides detailed usage amounts and associated costs without directly charging those business units. This transparency encourages accountability, allowing departments to see their resource consumption, make informed decisions on usage and identify areas for optimization while promoting a culture of cost awareness across the organization.

With consumption analytics now available on the hybrid cloud platform for HPE GreenLake, itโ€™s easier for HPE to enable it to report on the cloud services that also run there. As of August 21,, consumption analytics is now able to show data from these HPE GreenLake cloud services:

  • HPE GreenLake for Block Storage
  • HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery
  • HPE GreenLake for Compute Ops Management โ€“ OneView Edition
  • HPE Machine Learning Development Environment Software
  • OpsRamp

Customers who have pay-per-use subscriptions to these services can configure them to send cost to consumption analytics by entering โ€œshowback ratesโ€ for them from the Service Subscriptions page in the platform. We are not yet able to populate the customerโ€™s contractual rates for these subscriptions into their data feed, so we introduced showback rates to fill that gap, enabling cost analytics for a greater portion of a customerโ€™s HPE GreenLake environment. You decide what rates to enter here, and they are applied to each dayโ€™s usage to calculate its cost. You might enter the rates from your contract, or you might choose to add an โ€œupliftโ€ to them so that the showback reports your users see will reflect a charge for the value added by your IT team.

We hope you enjoy the ability to view the cost for these new services in business terms, and we look forward to enabling more HPE GreenLake cloud services for consumption analytics.

To use consumption analytics, log in to HPE GreenLake and launch or provision it from your services catalog. For more information about entering showback rates, see the documentation.
