Keeping digital transformation on track: 3 key guardrails
Most data-first initiatives can benefit from clearly articulated principles that provide overall direction and guide activities. Here are three examples from a telcoโs transformation journey.
By Yara-Yasemin Schuetz, HPE Digital Advisor
Data-first modernization has become a permanent and dynamic fixture of IT strategy. As businesses continue to increase their investments, thereโs growing interest in establishing โguardrailsโ to demarcate the journey and keep it from veering off-path. Companies are looking for clearly delineated principles to underpin their transformation, providing direction and guiding execution of all activities.
In a recent CIO.com article, I described three guardrails that HPE helped a telecommunications company to identify (see Lessons from a Telco to Leverage Guardrails in Transforming through Data-First Modernization). Telcos are in many respects at the forefront of digitalization, and these principles will have broad appeal across many sectors:
Sustainability. For many enterprises, becoming a more digital business and becoming a more sustainable business are two sides of the same coin. In this case, the telco chose to prioritize three components: the reduction of emissions associated with the production and usage of its products; green networking; and environmental, social and governance (ESG) reporting.
Sovereignty. Digital sovereignty includes having access to state-of-the-art capabilities in key technologies, services, and platforms; the ability to freely and responsibly choose between your own solutions and options from trusted global partners; and the ability to act autonomously in a partner ecosystem โ which in this case included multiple hyperscalers.
Servicizing. The transition from offering products to providing or expanding services can open fresh opportunities for businesses in many verticals. In this case, the telco chose to evolve its business model to deliver platform and ecosystem services, and potentially data-driven services in the future.
Of course, these principles are not exclusive, and every companyโs choices will be different. But whatever your industry, your business model or your goals, HPE Pointnext Services can help you identify the right framework to support the success of your initiative.
