The operating model is the key to the digital transformation door
How do you create value – and what value should you create? The answers are changing as companies become more edge-centric, data driven, and cloud-enabled.
By Craig Partridge, Worldwide Senior Director for HPE Pointnext Services’ Digital Advisory & Transformation Practice
At first glance, it might seem that the concept of the business operating model is somewhat remote from the strategies and goals of digital transformation. After all, it’s an idea that’s often summarized in rather vague terms – “how we do things around here.” But for companies that are looking to seize the opportunities presented by the digital era, understanding the operating model and knowing how to shape it are foundational principles for success.
I explain why in a recent article at CIO.com: Evolve Your Operating Model – It Will Drive Everything. What digitalization and the business model have – or should have – in common is an intense focus on value. As I note in the article, my own definition of the operating model is “the things you do to create value.” And that raises a crucial question, especially in the digital context: What value to do you need to create?
Companies’ answers to that question are evolving quickly as new digital realities impact today’s business environments. Traditionally, IT has been viewed as a cost center with a focus on delivering value to internal end-users. But with the ongoing evolution of a new kind of enterprise – one that’s edge-centric, data driven, and cloud-enabled, in HPE’s vision – the business model will shift towards the customer experience, innovation, and the ability to bring new digital products and services to market quickly.
This has far-reaching implications – for example, it will influence your choice of partners to supply the infrastructure and expertise you need in a new operating model. Read the article for a close look at that dynamic and how HPE can help you at every stage of your business model evolution.
