Blue screen when installing windows 2003 on a 850R
I start from a AHA 4542 with two 2 gb disks. (My raid controller is not working well.)

Re: Blue screen when installing windows 2003 on a 850R
According to this chart, the Proliant 800 series does not support Windows 2003:
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/servers/os-support-matrix-310.pdf
Are you sure your server is not an 1850R?
Here's a link to the Hardware Requirements for Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/evaluation/sysreqs/default.mspx
To make this work, I would think you'll have to manually collect drivers. I'm guessing that your present symptom is probably caused by the video driver, so I'd start there first.

Re: Blue screen when installing windows 2003 on a 850R
Here is the info about the video controller for a Pentium II version of the 1850R. It's still not crystal clear to me what model you have since I can't find an 850R on the HP website.
Video Controller
Controller Chip ATI RAGE IIC PCI
Video DRAM 1 MB Video SGRAM
Data Transfer Method 32-bit PCI
Support Resolution 640 x 480
800 x 600
1024 x 768
Supported Color Depths: 16.7M, 64K, 256, 16
64K, 256, 16
256, 16
Connector VGA
Unfortunately, neither ATI nor Microsoft, nor HP offer a W2K3 driver for this video. Try this technique:

Re: Blue screen when installing windows 2003 on a 850R
If your boot partition is a FAT32 partition, you may be able to boot from a WIN98SE floppy and perform the functions necessary to force standard VGA drivers. If the boot partition is NTFS, you may be able to accomplish that by using the tools available from www.ntfs.com

Re: Blue screen when installing windows 2003 on a 850R
At what point does the blue screen occur ?
I am experiencing similar problems with a ProLiant 3000R.... 3000R/500MHz/1GB RAM/RAID SA3200 card/Dual NIC 3122.... Basic setup with SmartStart 5.5 then manual W2K3 install.
My 3000 has latest RomPaq for BIOS and RAID (4.15A and 4.50 respectively)...
W2K3 begins fine.... you get to the stage where you enter the server name and Admin account password, click next a short pause then blue screen (IRQ_NOT_EQUAL_TO...)
Removing the NIC card allowed the installtion to complete OK. If the NIC is embedded it can be disabled in the BIOS.
Once W2K3 is on, the card NIC was added and operated in stand alone rather than teamed config. I'm still struggling to get the teaming to work.
From memory, the 850R uses a Cirrus Logic CL-GD54M30 chip for the graphics rather than the ATI Rage IIC (as in the 1850R or 3000).
The GD54M40 / M30 can use the standard GD5440 driver which is OK. There are quite a few sites which give suggestions on drivers for the GD5440 ranging form Win2K drivers to some from 3dlabs ! XP does recognise and provide drivers for the GD5440 so it would seem likely that W2K3 does as well ?!?
If you get basic graphics working then Windows will probably accept the GD54M30 running in VGA... so hence my post on disabling the NICs.
Anyway, maybe better to draw a line with the 850R on W2K3 and stick with Win2000 ?
Best regards
