GPO restrict web links
Hi
I have a sbs 2003 with GPO set to suit my requirements. I have denied iexplore.exe in the deny application policy setting. But when i use word or excel and click the weblink for online search it opens internet explorer. Any suggestions to block this. BTW when i mail a link in outlook and try to open it denies.
Regards

Re: GPO restrict web links
Blocking iexplore is probably not a good idea if you do not have installed an alternative browser. Many application rely on the explorer functions. This is cuasing the behaviour you describe, probaly many more other sceanrios. If you wish to control access to web pages I suggest you use a proxy server instead. SBS premium edition comes with ISA, otherwise I suggest to look for an entry-level appliance with firewall function.

Re: GPO restrict web links
Restricting the internet explorer browser is no a good idea, especially if you do not aoffer an alternative browser. Many application rely on it, making these apps act unpredictable. You also miss the free SharePoint (WSS) usage.
When you wish to restrict access to certain website I suggest using a proxy instead. SBS2003 premium comes with ISA functionality too. If not, I advise to buy an entry level proxy/firewall appliance.
