Installing Windows 2003 on ML370G1, install hangs with "Setup is starting Windows"

Greetings,

On attempting to install W2k3 on a ML370G1 the install hangs during windows setup with the message "Setup is starting Windows".

Using Smartstart 5.5 (tried 7.x and 6.x, but they error with a message to the effect that they are not complatible with the hardware)

Tried another RAID controller, a 3200, but the installation hangs just as it does with the Integrated controller.

Removed all but one RAM module.

No additional cards (except for the 3200 controller) in the PCI slots.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Mark

Re: Installing Windows 2003 on ML370G1, install hangs with "Setup is starting Windows"

I had the same problem with "setup is starting windows" trying to get W2k3 installed on a ML530. The only way I could get W2k3 installed was to use SmartStart 5.x and do an assisted install of w2k. Update to SP4 and apply Proliant Support Pack 7.0. Next, run the upgrade to w2k3 and apply PSP 7.0 after. I already tried updating the array controller firmware and the ROM.

I noticed on the SmartStart 7.x CD, you can create a startup disk for Windows 2003 to do a manual install of w2k3. Has anyone tried this method? I think it will work as the startup disk will contain all the latest drivers for the array controllers? Booting directly off the w2k3 cd does not load the latest drivers.. any thoughts?

Re: Installing Windows 2003 on ML370G1, install hangs with "Setup is starting Windows"

Ran into the same issue with my ML530 G1. Here's how I got past the 'Setup is starting Windows'
message:
1) Flashed the BIOS with ROMPaq P19 v. 4.10 A dated 12/18/2002. This is from HP's site, SP23652.exe.
2) Downloaded "HP ProLiant 32-Bit SCSI Controller Driver for Windows 2000/Server 2003". This is
from HP's site, cp003193.exe. (I don't have a RAID controller, just the Integrated Dual-Channel Wide-Ultra2 SCSI Adapter.)
3) Extracted cp003193 and used its floppy.bat utility to copy the SCSI adapter files to diskette
4) Booted the server from the Windows 2003 Server CD and pressed F6 when prompted to install SCSI drivers.
5) Inserted the diskette when prompted ... and all's well!

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Hi,
i was having the same problems...

- upgrade your bios version(not necessary but recommendable)
and
- in the bios verify if the operating system is set to windows 2000!

Re: Installing Windows 2003 on ML370G1, install hangs with "Setup is starting Windows"

Hi Guys

I have the same problem but only when using the 3200 raid card. Windows 2003 has been running on this system but I had to change my disks so I did a full system erase. After I did this the server would continue to ask me to set the raid controller in slot 2 to be the primary boot device. I have confirmed the issue by putting a standard U3 9.1 gb disk on the primary onboard controller and installing windows 2003 on to it. I did another system erase on the scsi disk before I tried the 9.1 gb disk install. There clearly is an issue with doing a full system erase when your on the ltest firmware. I will try to manually specify the raid controller as suggested, but I didn't have to do this on the previous succesful install.

Re: Installing Windows 2003 on ML370G1, install hangs with "Setup is starting Windows"

I was finally able to install w2k3 without putting w2k first. The solution was similar to the one posted by Vern except I created a driver diskette for windows 2003 from the smartstart 7.01 CD. Press F6 when Windows prompts if you want to install a thrid party device and tell it to load the array controller from the floppy disk and it didn't freeze at the "setup is starting windows" message.

Hardware: ML530(800mhz) and 3200 raid controller

Re: Installing Windows 2003 on ML370G1, install hangs with "Setup is starting Windows"

Hi Guys

I found an easier solution to the problem. The ML530 along with the 3200 raid card works flawlessly with out the need for a floppy with the drivers on. I had previously installed 2k and 2003 without any problems so I knew it worked. I first installed 2003 on to a SCSI hard disk I had knocking around to prove the machine wasn't faulty. I then tried repeatedly with out success to install 2003 on the machine with the raid controller as the bootable adapter. Again this failed time after time, so I removed the raid adapter and installed it into another pci slot. to my amazement the blinking thing then went through the install fine.

I think the problem stemmed from the fact that I did a system erase with an older version of the utility than the one install on the diags partition. The Bios seemed to be confused as it kept telling me that it had changed the Raid to be the first adapter every time I ran the system configuration. After I moved the Card to a different slot it no longer said this. In my case I have to conclude that it was the system configuration causing the problem. I would be interested in knowing if you guys did similar prior to the problem.

Cheers

Re: Installing Windows 2003 on ML370G1, install hangs with "Setup is starting Windows"

HP directed me to do this and it worked.

This is a G1 ML370 using onboard array, 2* 18Gb drives RAID1, 2* PIII 866, 1Gb RAM.

Basically use Manual Option and choose Windows 2000 Advanced Server (SCU ends up configured for this)

Anyone know if a downside to having the SCU set for W2K?

To install Window 2003, we suggest the following:
NOTE: Please remove any third party hardware installed in the server before
installing the operating system.
1. Boot the server using the SmartStart CD version 5.5 and run the System
Erase Utility.
2. Power cycle the server when prompted.
3. Boot the server using the SmartStart CD.
4. Select the Manual Configuration.
5. Select the Operating System as Windows 2000 Advanced Server.
6. Now the Primary Operating System will be set to Windows 2000 in the
System Configuration Utility (SCU). Save SCU and select "continue with
SmartStart".
7. Follow the onscreen instructions and continue the Windows 2003 Operating
System installation (insert the Windows 2003 CD in the CD-ROM drive when it
prompts for a Operating System CD).

Re: Installing Windows 2003 on ML370G1, install hangs with "Setup is starting Windows"

I had the same problem on a Proliant DL380. Went into the CMOS setup program (via F10 for Partition Utilities) and changed the OPERATING SYSTEM from OTHER to WINDOWS 2000 (you first have to select Win NT).

I didn't have to load drivers from diskette during Windows 2003 installation. But I did update the BIOS to the latest version.

Re: Installing Windows 2003 on ML370G1, install hangs with "Setup is starting Windows"

I have a similar problem when I tried to install SBS 2003 on a ML330 G2 (1.4GHz CPU with a RAID 532 on the PCI slot). The machine came with SCSI hard drive card. I left the machines' SCSI card off, and connected my 3 SCSI hard drives to the RAID 532 controller.

I always get the Blue screen with message on the left bottom "Setup is starting Windows", the hanged on forever.

There is one same message when I ran SmartStart 5.5 or 7.0:
SCSI Bios not installed!

Any people can help me? Thanks

I have a DL380 G3 and ran into of course the same problem. Changing the BIOS OS selection from other to Windows 2000/2003 fixed it!
