Migration Plan

Hi all,
I have plan to migrate my old PC server running windows sbs2003 and SQL server on it. The new system will be ML110 running windows sbs2003 or windows 2003 server std.I don't know what I must prepare to do that plan. Can anybody help or tell me what should I learn to migrate my server. Thank you.

Re: Migration Plan

Not exactly what you are looking for but the guidelines should be the same:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sbs/2003/deploy/sbs2k203.mspx

Also if you were considering other servers besides the ML110 I'd recommend having a look at the Server Migration Pack - P2P (Physical to Proliant) that HP offers as well.

http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/proliantessentials/valuepack/migrate/index.html

The Q&A page lists the supported destination servers using this tool.

Re: Migration Plan

Thanks Joel,
I'll learn first from technet documentation, but when I follow the second link you gave, the page is not found. BTW thank for your help.

Re: Migration Plan

Are you trying to open the link in a new window? If you are, the link has a javascript command to open a new window and you will come up with an error.

Alternatively if you are copying and pasting the link the end bit will probably be chopped off because of the text wraparound inside the text box.

Good luck with the migration!

I opened only the url address by removing javasript command and '' marks. I got message from hp web that they applogize the page cannot be opened.

Re: Migration Plan

Sounds like you need to raise the functional level of the target domain first.

Re: Migration Plan

Hi Joel,

You're right, finally I choosed the easier way to migrate the DC by adding new DC change the global catalog and then demote the old DC. Now the last to be done is to migrate the SQL server run on old DC to the new DC. Could you help with this. I don't know at all about SQL server and how the application depend on it. Thank you.

Re: Migration Plan

I don't have much experience with SQL server but you can search Technet for the resources you need:

Re: Migration Plan

Hi all,

Last time I said that my migration plan succeed by adding a new DC to the domain then change the Operation Master to the new DC. Finally in last step, I realize that I was wrong. The old DC (SBS 2003) can not be demoted. So how it would be to make SBS server retired from domain ? Thanks
